James Harrison was born in Australia in 1936. At the age of 14, he underwent major chest surgery that required over a dozen blood transfusions. Grateful for the strangers who had helped save his life, he made a vow to give back by becoming a blood donor as soon as he was eligible. True to his word, James began donating blood at 18 — and doctors quickly discovered something extraordinary in his plasma.

His blood contained a rare antibody that could prevent Rhesus disease, a potentially fatal condition affecting unborn babies when their Rh-negative mothers develop antibodies against their Rh-positive fetuses. James’s antibody became the foundation of the Anti-D injection, a medical breakthrough that has since protected millions of pregnancies. Through regular donations for more than 60 years, he is credited with helping to save the lives of over 2.4 million babies — including his own granddaughter.

By the time he retired at the age of 81 in 2018, James had donated blood over 1,000 times. Though he never sought fame, his lifelong act of generosity earned him the nickname “The Man with the Golden Arm” and the admiration of a nation. On his final visit to the donation center, staff stood in tears, honoring a quiet hero whose selfless commitment left a legacy of life and hope for generations to come.
