People often ask me about the most fascinating job I’ve ever had. Without hesitation, my mind always goes back to 1999, when I was given the extraordinary privilege of photographing the Scottish Crown Jewels inside Edinburgh Castle.
The timing couldn’t have been more historic—the crown had just been used to open the new Scottish Parliament, sitting beside Queen Elizabeth II herself. And now, here it was, in front of my lens.

I created two multi-level, 360-degree views of the crown—over 400 individual images each—one with and one without the velvet bonnet.
For this, I used a custom-built setup that could rotate the crown and move the camera, shooting with a Nikon E3S, one of the very first professional digital cameras.

The crown’s gold and original design date back to around 1300, to the days of Robert the Bruce. I was the first non-Scottish photographer granted permission to photograph it, and for the shoot, they moved it out of the Crown Room and into the Great Hall just for me. Carefully watched by Richard Welander, the Head of Collections at Historic Environment Scotland.
