Amanda and I met at a birthday party in 2013. We chatted until I had to leave; I was headed to what would be a horrible date. A few boyfriends between us, and we finally both met very, very nice men who like whisky, second-hand books, vintage records, and live jazz.
She plays piano, makes the best tater tot casserole ever (she’s from the midwest) and we’ve gotten into a years-long habit of going to spin class together followed by coffee in our local Brooklyn coffee shop, along with conversation that ranges from makeup to world news.
Guy speaks French and Creole in addition to English, and often shows up to the bar with a book he’s reading that I can’t make heads or tails out of. He’s very kind, and lets my baby chew his face. He has a booming laugh that is warm and contagious, and makes a really good pork shoulder, and competes with my husband on Jeopardy! answers.
We love them.
I’m planning on being a guest at the wedding but wanted to take their engagement photos, starting first on the steps of the brownstone Amanda lived in for years. Guy moved in a while ago and they made the little space work, but it was a tight fit in that studio until they snagged a one-bedroom around the corner. When we took these photos, they were just about to move into the fancy new place, so I thought we should commemorate the occasion on the steps.
We went from there to the cobblestone streets of Gowanus to pose them in front of street art (another hobby they share), then back up to my side of Park Slope for a pizza photo at Smiling Pizza. It’s on the corner of 9th Street and 7th Avenue, where it’s been for years. I was going for scene from an independent film, and I think I nailed it.
