RARE OTTER SIGHTING IN TAWI-TAWI!

When was the last time you saw otters swimming in Philippine waters?

Two otters were spotted near the coast of Taganak, Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi, in a rare wildlife sighting that quickly caught public attention.

Police officers who captured the video saw the animals swimming near the island and even shared fish with them.

The sighting is especially notable because otters are rarely seen in this part of the country. Previous records in Turtle Islands have drawn attention from wildlife authorities and researchers, with earlier sightings in the area linked to the presence of otters in the island municipality.

Taganak is part of Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi, a remote area known for its rich marine biodiversity and its role in wildlife conservation.

While the animals were described in some accounts as “sea otters,” similar past sightings in Turtle Islands have also been discussed by wildlife authorities as rare otter records in the Philippines, making careful identification important.

The sighting is a reminder of how much biodiversity still exists in the country’s farthest island communities—and why marine and coastal habitats must continue to be protected.
