Imagine having a spacecraft that could travel at the speed of light.

Andromeda would still be about 2.5 million years away.

That’s because the Andromeda Galaxy is roughly 2.5 million light-years from Earth. When you look at it in the night sky, you aren’t seeing Andromeda as it exists today — you’re seeing ancient light that began its journey millions of years ago.

Andromeda is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way and, under sufficiently dark skies, it can be seen without a telescope as a faint, hazy patch of light.

It is enormous, containing an estimated hundreds of billions to around a trillion stars and stretching roughly 200,000 light-years or more across, depending on where its faint outer regions are measured.

Even light needs millions of years to cross the distance between our galaxies.

So when you look at Andromeda, you’re not just looking into space.

You’re looking 2.5 million years into the past. 🌌🔭

Two faint points of light turned out to be planets — and astronomers had never directly photographed a planetary system quite like this before.

The young star, located about 300 light-years away in the constellation Musca, is roughly similar in mass to our Sun. But while our Sun is around 4.6 billion years old, this star is only about 17 million years old.

Its two enormous companions are very different from the planets in our Solar System.

One is estimated at around 14 times the mass of Jupiter, while the other is about six times Jupiter’s mass. They orbit their star at roughly 160 and 320 times the Earth-Sun distance.

ESO’s Very Large Telescope captured the system in 2020 by carefully blocking the star’s intense glare, allowing the much fainter planets to appear.

Astronomers had directly imaged individual exoplanets before.

But this was something different.

For the first time, they had captured an extraordinary portrait of multiple planets orbiting the same young star — a planetary family photographed together. 🌌🪐
