The southern portion of Joshua Tree National Park lies within the Colorado Desert, a subregion of the greater Sonoran. It sits lower in elevation, hotter, and more austere than the Mojave landscape to the north. The Joshua trees disappear here, replaced by ocotillo, cholla, creosote, and smoke trees that thrive in the arid flats. This side of the park sees fewer visitors, but it carries its own quiet intensity—a sense of vastness and survival that predates the park’s designation. Once crossed by the Cahuilla and Chemehuevi, later by miners and stage routes, the Colorado side remains largely unaltered, its silence intact.
