According to historical accounts, in 1791 the ring was given to the royal hairdresser Leonard, during an unsuccessful attempt to escape Paris. The ring was later given to the queens only surviving daughter Marie Theresa. After being sold to various individuals, it was sold at auction last spring by for about $14 million.
