My photography group's monthly challenge — shoot a portrait inspired by a master. I chose Richard Avedon's American West Series. If you know it, you know why. Those images are relentless in their simplicity: stark white backgrounds, natural light, and subjects who look like they've lived every single one of their years.
Samuel was the perfect collaborator. There's an openness to him that the camera loved, a willingness to just be in front of the lens without performing. That's rarer than you'd think, and it's exactly what Avedon always searched for.
This one is among my favorites.
