Art of Brodsky

Art of Brodsky It wasn’t until I moved to New York City in late 2015 that I started to really appreciate and take an interest in the craft.

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I am a professional nerd who has always been a lover of nature and science, but I was a late bloomer when it came to photography. I bought my first DSLR in the spring of 2016 and—with NYC as the perfect playground—began shooting all sorts of things at all hours of the day and night. Overall, photography has been a wonderful addition to my life. It’s p

rovided a new outlet for my creativity and enabled me to see our beautiful world in brand new ways. The process itself is incredibly calming and has brought me such joy, and I hope that by sharing some of the fruits of my creative endeavors, I can pass on some of that positivity and inspiration to you. You can buy all my photos--as prints, canvases, and on metal--at ArtOfBrodsky.darkroom.tech, and I am available for events/photoshoots upon request. Also, be sure to follow me on IG !

🌩🔱 Riders on the Storm 🔱🌩

I don’t recommend accidentally getting caught out on a lake during a storm, but it does make for some striking & moody shots 📸⚡️

I recently went ATVing through Arapaho National Forest, which was hit hard by the East Troublesome Fire last fall. Having lived in the Eastern U.S. my entire life, this was my first time witnessing the devastation wrought by the massive wildfires that are becoming all too common in the West. Even then, I only saw the calm and quiet aftermath nearly a year after the firestorm, and yet for miles and miles I was surrounded by largely barren and scorched earth. I can’t imagine encountering an ongoing blaze of that magnitude.

I won’t lie—initially, I felt fleeting moments of selfish annoyance that I wasn’t able to experience the mountain landscapes in all their beauty. But those feelings quickly gave way to the far more powerful emotions of concern for the forests themselves and the abundance of life that depends on them as home.

Periodic fires are necessary and even beneficial for the health of forests, where they cleanse brush buildup and create conditions for new plants to emerge and thrive. Many trees are adapted to frequently occurring fires (of certain sizes), and the heat from fires can trigger dormant seeds to sprout. Throughout the journey, I saw vivid patches of green that highlighted this new growth and testified to the resilience of plants and animals within forests.

However, for several reasons—most importantly climate change and our poor practices when it comes to forest management and conservation (compared to traditional / indigenous societies)—these larger, catastrophic fires are now happening much more often. And if things continue at this rate, they could overwhelm forests’ ability to regenerate themselves and threaten the long-term health of these absolutely magnificent ecosystems.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you see this moody image?

What really grabs me about this spooky shot is how the mist and the treelines are parallel to each other, with the house occupying the seemingly sacred ground in between. With a little imagination, it appears as if these opposing cosmic forces are closing in on each other as part of some otherworldly power struggle, with the house serving as the fateful battleground 🤍🖤

I know I may be alone in this feeling, but I'm definitely looking forward to fall and winter. These New York summers are brutal 🥵

I’ve had some accidental shots turn out pretty awesome before, but nothing like this. I honestly don’t even know how this image formed the way it did, and feel like I couldn’t replicate it even if I tried thousands of times. I’ve done intentional panning before, but this time was accidental; the car I was riding shotgun in (on the way to Grand Lake) was going too fast, and my shutter speed was too slow. But what blows my mind is how only some of the image reflected the panning effect—while the rest was captured crystal clear.

Photography is definitely a mix of art & science, but it’s amazing whenever you experience a little serendipitous magic sneaking in too. Very curious to hear any of your ideas as to how you think this happened, or how one might be able to replicate this effect

“If the world seems unfair or beyond our understanding, Sublime places suggest that it is not surprising that things should be thus. We are the playthings of the forces that laid out the oceans and chiseled the mountains. Sublime places gently move us to acknowledge limitations that we might otherwise encounter with anxiety or anger in the ordinary flow of events. It is not just nature that defies us. Human life is as overwhelming. But it is the vast spaces of nature that perhaps provide us with the finest, the most respectful reminder of all that exceeds us. If we spend time in them, they may help us to accept more graciously the great, unfathomable events that mo**st our lives and will inevitably return us to dust.”

Hi, I’m Arthur Brodsky, a New York City-based photographer.

For those of you who don’t know me, I was a late bloomer when it came to photography, but I’ve always been a lover of nature and science (see: my sleeve). And it’s still the profession into which I pour most of my passion. (After I finished my Ph.D. doing cancer research, I switched to science communication full-time and now specialize in cancer immunotherapy—yes, I am a professional nerd.) But after I moved to New York City 5 years ago, I started to really appreciate and take an interest in the craft of photography. I bought my first DSLR in the spring of 2016 and—with NYC as the perfect playground—began shooting all sorts of things at all hours of the day and night.

Overall, photography has been a wonderful addition to my life. It’s provided a new outlet for my creativity and enabled me to see our beautiful world in brand new ways. The process itself is incredibly calming and has brought me such joy, and I hope that by sharing some of the fruits of my creative endeavors, I’ve been able to pass on some of that positivity and inspiration to you.

As a show of gratitude for my 34th birthday, all my art will be 34% off at https://ArtOfBrodsky.darkroom.tech until the end of February—just use the code ab34 at checkout!
