Flash photography really doesn’t have to be as complicated as people make it seem.

For this shoot I wanted something bold, direct, and a little editorial, so I kept things simple with the Godox V480S and used it as my key light.

One of the biggest things that helped me with flash was learning to expose for the background first, THEN adding flash after.

Comment EDIT to give Adobe Lightroom a try 📸

1. Import: Cards out, everything into , and I walk away. Decompressing after a wedding day is part of the process.

2. Assisted: This used to take me half a day in a completely separate app. Now it lives inside Lightroom. I set my filters and it handles the misfires, exposure issues, and closed eyes before I even sit down properly.

3. Edit: Selects locked in, base preset applied across the whole gallery, then I go image by image. This is the part I actually love and I finally get to arrive here with energy left.

4. Firefly: Anything that needs a little extra gets sent to right from Lightroom. Distracting backgrounds, expanding frames for album layouts, done in minutes.

On-camera flash doesn’t have to feel intimidating.

These are some of my go-to settings for direct flash on the dance floor:
Shutter: 1/200
Aperture: F4.0
ISO: 500
Flash Power: 2.0

Direct flash is one of my favorite ways to capture movement, energy, and all the fun candid moments during a wedding day.

The gear isn’t the upgrade. Knowing where to put the light is.

Clean and even from on camera. Depth and shape the moment it moves off. Same scene, same subject, completely different story told in the shadows.

Learn both and you have options for every single situation a wedding day throws at you.

Photography isn’t just about capturing a moment, it’s about capturing how the moment felt.

Fast shutter speeds freeze movement and keep everything sharp.
Slower shutter speeds create motion blur that adds emotion, energy, and a more cinematic feel.

Next time you’re shooting, try experimenting with both and see how different your photos feel.

Your flash isn’t broken… it’s probably just dramatic. 😅

If your flash suddenly stops firing at a wedding or session, don’t panic and start spiraling in the middle of the dance floor. Most of the time it’s one of a few tiny issues:

• your settings are making the flash work too hard • your trigger lost connection • your batteries are dying • your positioning is blocking signal

These are the exact troubleshooting steps I run through at literally every wedding day when something starts acting weird.
