The family road trip ended on the side of a highway when 40-year-old Chris Dalton suddenly pulled the SUV onto the shoulder and told his wife he could no longer feel his hands.
Their two sons had been arguing in the backseat about snacks and music just moments earlier while Chris laughed and threatened to “turn this car around.” The family was only an hour away from reaching a rented lake cabin for their summer vacation.
At first, his wife thought his hands had simply fallen asleep from driving too long.
But then Chris started struggling to grip the steering wheel.
His breathing became uneven, and he kept flexing his fingers in confusion, whispering that something felt “seriously wrong.” Within minutes, the numbness spread up his arms, and his speech became weak and shaky. Panicked, his wife called 911 while trying to keep him calm as cars sped past them on the highway.
By the time paramedics arrived, Chris could barely move.
Doctors later discovered he was suffering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system suddenly attacks the nerves, causing rapid paralysis. Just days earlier, Chris had brushed off what he thought was “a small stomach bug.”
Instead of spending the weekend fishing with his sons, Chris was rushed into the ICU after the paralysis began affecting the muscles needed for breathing.
His wife said their youngest son keeps asking why his dad suddenly “forgot how to move.”
Now the family’s packed suitcases still sit unopened in the back of the SUV while Chris remains connected to monitors and breathing support in intensive care.
Please keep Chris in your thoughts and prayers tonight as he fights through this terrifying condition. His family says they are holding tightly onto hope and praying he regains his strength.
