I thought the mangrove tunnels were the destination. 🌿

They weren't.

After crossing open water, the route opened into a completely different world of canals, bridges, islands, and waterfront homes.

One trip. Two very different adventures.

The alligator stayed exactly where he was. 🐊

Meanwhile, the rest of us politely paddled around him.

I promised my mom a relaxing kayaking trip. 😅

The river disagreed.

By the second obstacle, I was towing a paddleboard through a narrow gap while my mom silently reconsidered all of her recent life choices.

I'd still call it a successful adventure. 🤣

I told my mom we were going kayaking. 😅 Technically, that was true. What I forgot to mention was that the river had a few obstacles waiting for us along the way. Somehow, we both made it through.

And yes... I already have another adventure planned.
I may have forgotten to tell her about the rapids, log jams, and waterfalls. 🤣

It looks like a bunker.

But appearances can be deceiving.

The real story behind this massive concrete structure goes in a completely different direction.

It looked pretty ordinary at first. 🌿

Just a patch of mangroves, some roots, and a sandy shoreline.

Then I looked a little closer.

Suddenly, the sand was full of tiny crabs digging, feeding, and disappearing into their burrows. An entire hidden world hiding in plain sight.

Meanwhile, I'm struggling with one kayak... 😅

Some people make difficult jobs look ridiculously easy.

The farther you go, the narrower it gets. 🌿🛶

Twisting mangrove roots, tight turns, and just enough room for a kayak to squeeze through. Places like this are why I never get tired of exploring Florida's waterways.

I almost walked right past this. 👀

Just a few steps from the famous Devil's Den spring, a series of tiny waterfalls flows quietly behind the ponds.

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries aren't far away at all — they're simply hidden in plain sight.

Just minutes from downtown Sarasota... 🌿🛶

And yet, once you enter the mangrove tunnels of Lido Key, it feels like you've left the city far behind.
