Beauty Beaded
J. R. Welch

The call comes from another continent.
Waters that suffocate.
Chains that haunt.
Blood at the wrist.
Metal against skin.

Seeds carried across water:
okra, corn, strength,
pressed into new world soil.

and still they made music.
laid down a beat.

tap, tap, tap
against the tambourine.

Congo Square—

traditions handed down,
generation to generation,
the consistent slap of the hand to leather.

The Indians, they be pretty, indeed they be pretty.

And the men who hit the tambourines
fortified levees
against the banks of the Mississippi.

Super Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year. Here are a few of my favorite images. It is always pure joy to photograph these culture barriers and spirit of black excellence in our city. I love that always gets overwhelmed with emotions and cries.

Irish Channel Parade with and a leisurely pace. We walked some of the route, watched people, and grabbed a few moments along the way, everyone was loving the weather. Always a special day around and when everyone is drenched in green.

Thanksgiving was full in the best way.

We had William and his wife Madison home with us, and there is just something about having your kids back under your roof that warms the air. Jack our doodle, was thrilled to have a house full of people, and Olive was right there in the middle of everything too. Having Blythe out for Thanksgiving break and her fiancé Hector here made the weekend feel even more complete.

William was happy to be back in New Orleans and did what any smart person does when they come home. He ate his way through some favorites. Katie’s, Domilise’s, Morning Call, Banana Blossom, Venezia. If you know, you know.

Lots of laughter. Lots of stories. Lots and lots of food. 😂

We missed Addison. I hope she had a good day with friends and with Wednesday her cat keeping her company.

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all.

Sundays in New Orleans

They move slower than molasses.
A good café, a slow walk, a familiar hymn — all of it part of the rhythm that makes this city feel alive and human.

Amy and I spent the day between places that feed both body and soul — Café Malou, St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian, Galatoire’s, and finally a slow walk through the Quarter.

It’s in days like this that I remember why I love this place so much. The way New Orleans holds time — not rushing it, not fighting it, just letting it be.

Grateful to call this city home.

Fried Chicken & Chocolate
2025

Today took me back to the best of Saturdays in the Bootheel of Missouri, my childhood.

Some of the happiest moments were spent around an old wooden television with a tube in it, the kind I was always told to get up and change the channel on. But Saturdays were different. Saturdays were the days I got to pick what we watched.

My favorite? Cartoons. The Hall of Justice. And back then, I was always Aquaman. I was gonna swim to unknown worlds.

One of the best things that could happen at our house on a Saturday morning was when Mom got up and made homemade biscuits with chocolate gravy. I mean, think about it; a kid, sugar, cocoa, butter, and all those delicious carbs.

I can still see it: our house on 2nd Street, 70s wood paneling on the wall, dark brown with little shades of black. The morning sun hitting the floor. Me, plate in hand. Mom on the couch. Fresh biscuits and chocolate gravy. Each bite filled with warmth and comfort.

Today, Amy and I went to Hot Stuff. They had biscuits and chocolate gravy and it was so reminiscent of the kind Mom made me as a boy. With one bite, I was transported back to that living room in Hayti. Same Mississippi River, just further north.

One of the things I love about New Orleans is that its connection to the past. From the architecture to the music, the deep cultural traditions, the food: it doesn’t just wink at the past. It walks with it. Embraces it. Inhabits it fully.

And today, at Hot Stuff, it walked me right back to my childhood.

Halloween in New Orleans never disappoints. Amy went full gothic enchantress; gold eyes, spider crown, and a calm, knowing stare that makes people stop in their tracks. I went a more haunted, a blend of broken poet and half-dead gentleman. Together, we walked through Jackson Square, candles glowing in the windows, jazz spilling out of the corners, the Cathedral pointing at the heavens. Then we sauntered over to Frenchmen Street. Human creativity on full display.

New Orleans knows how to hold beauty in an ancient way.

I wrote this one from a bench under these trees — humidity thick like broken memories.

Savannah isn’t just a city; she’s a mood that stays on your skin long after you depart.
