"It makes you stronger knowing what you went through to get to where you are right now.”- Leonard Fournette, III. Fournette helped his team win a playoff game by scoring a touchdown and earning 107 combined yards rushing and receiving in the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints Sunday. It was Fournette's first NFL victory in the Superdome. While it was not the result the Who Dat Nation hoped for, it was in many ways a profound victory for him that mirrors the journey of the city. Fifteen and half years ago Fournette and his family slept on the I-10 overpass for five nights in the hot, humid summer of August and September 2005 near the Superdome in the days following the federal levee failures after Hurricane Katrina. The hotel on Canal Street where his family rode out the storm filled with flood waters and eventually caught on fire. 10-year-old Fournette had to help carry his grandmother and cousins through flood water to get to the bridge. He recalled seeing bodies in the water and even saw a guy take the watch off of a dead man. Fournette’s mother recited prayers every night on the bridge and some nights it would rain and they had to pull covers over themselves while wearing the same clothes from days ago. Eventually they were taken to Baton Rouge and then Portland, Texas for a year before deciding to rebuild their family home on the Northshore in Slidell that had been destroyed. The Saints relocated for a time to Texas in San Antonio while the hole in Superdome and other damage was repaired. Fournette’s family rebuilt as did the city and region and he eventually played football for the St. Augustine Purple Knights in New Orleans before playing for LSU. Watching Fournette play in high school was like watching an NFL running back play in high school. He sometimes appeared to fly over a team of defenders. His his life’s journey from the nightmare of Katrina looking out at the damaged Superdome from the I-10 overpass to returning years later to win in the Superdome is a profoundly amazing journey. Congratulations to Leonard Fournette and his family and for New Orleans and to the Saints for returning and rebuilding. Photos by
