Russell Leaving Building #3
NEW ORLEANS, Abandoned Navy Base in the Bywater
A water leak caused this stairwell to be wet and slippery. At a different exit someone removed the handrails making that stairwell a little bit dangerous.

Since 1993 STRUCTURE OUT OF CHAOS has been following the saga of chronically homeless people living in non-traditional dwellings. This series is a paradox of visiting the homeless, in their homes. These are shelters created out of discarded objects, abandoned buildings, vehicles, tunnels, or even tents. The goal is to bring the conversation about the unhoused away from the people entrenched in the issue and into mainstream discourse. The photographs open the door to learn about this domestic humanitarian crisis. The desire is to shift our awareness away from criminalizing people and towards addressing the issues.

PLEASE HELP. This is a stock photograph of Tiny. Presently his clothes are too small and do not protect him from the cold weather of New Orleans. Grace at the Greenlight has a clothing closet for the unhoused but they do not have anything that fits him. His skin is exposed and it is 40 degrees at night. He sleeps on the cold sidewalk. The organization is in need of extra large clothing 3-5XL. If you have something to donate for Tiny please get in touch with Sarah 504-239-4544. They could also use warm blankets.

If you are not in New Orleans please be aware that there are unhoused people near you that may need your used clothing and blankets this winter.

Jimmy

In Louisiana Jimmy was arrested and he served five months before they realized with an abundance of evidence that he was innocent of the charges. Regardless of this fact, he will receive a bill to compensate the jail for his room and board. Homeless people obviously can’t afford to pay such a bill. The system can feel like a deck being stacked against them.
