How often do you let yourself be silent and still?

Even if you’re not religious, you can likely relate to this. Last weekend, on my retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani, it occurred to me that our life journey isn’t much different from a walk through the woods. Much of a hike is plain, simple and ordinary. A lot of trees, greenery, sticks, patches of grass, etc. However, once in a while, you come across something extraordinary.

If you’re feeling stagnant today, try to pay close attention to the extraordinary things that you are often too much in a hurry to notice. It takes a special kind of tuning into your own soul, which can be a scary place. Introspection can give us a great deal of insight as to where our heart is focused.

life on Lake Erie.

Rounding that corner by the break wall from the mouth of Sandusky Bay is an outstanding view. It’s the true way visitors to Cedar Point used to arrive many years ago. The main entrance to Hotel Breakers used to be on the beach side. Some call it, “the front porch.” A hot summer day walking the beach is one of my favorite summertime traditions. Thank, Kurt, for taking us out.

What a great subject to capture - fireworks. 🎆

Happy Fourth of July! I hope you had a fun and safe holiday. As a country, let us remember how much more alike we are than we are different. Celebrate what brings us together, not what makes us different. God bless the U.S.A.

Just about 11 years ago, my love for photography was invigorated during this lightning storm. Living right down in the Cove, I happened to notice some extravagant lightning coming from over the Sandusky Bay. I walked down to the end of Curran St. and set up. I knew I only had a few minutes as I could smell the rain in the air. This was either my first or second exposure. As soon as I opened up the 30 second shutter, when the lightning struck, I had such a feeling of elation. Mid-frame. My favorite place, , as a backdrop. Perfect lightning bolt, not obstructed by the clouds. A tough subject to snap. I ran back home to load it on my computer and review - my mom still recalls me tearing like a stampede up the stairs.

It’s moments like those that make us feel alive. Those moments are harder to come by as we get older. The world is less novel. We take more for granted. I encourage you to look at who you were and who you’ve become in a new way today. What are the things that used to excite you? Where does your life need reinvigoration?

It’s summer days like these I miss the park. I would wander around and think of good angles to get beautiful landscape images of the midway. There are thousands of places to consider. During the day, this view of Gemini midway might look plain and simple. At dusk, however, the string lights pop, the light drag on Monster looks unique, and the silhouette of Millennium Force in the background give context to how massive the park is. Happy summer, everyone. 🎢🌅

This song by will always remind me of my first full time season. They played it on the midway all the time.

This was taken on the job when I worked for .

Take me back to . The 14 degree morning was frigid today on the North Coast of Ohio. Wishing I was back on summer vacation with my wife’s family where it was warm.

Check out this sunset and the layers of mountains in the distance. It reminds me of a album cover. I captured this with my D750.
