The PGA Tour heads to Memorial Park Golf Course this week, which means Tom Doak is in the news. One of my favorite Doak designs is the North Course at Stonewall links, playfully referred to as the “Udder Course”. The North mixes exciting short holes and otherworldly native and bunkering with challenging greens laid across two sprawling open areas on either side of Reading Furnace Road. It feels like spring today, go tee it up!

A friend I saw over the weekend is visiting Lancaster Country Club this Spring. Lancaster is a big ballpark capable of hosting championships but can be enjoyed by all. The Conestoga River and surrounding landforms bring drama and elevation to Flynn’s layout, which integrates water hazards as well as any classic course I’ve visited, especially on holes 4-7 and the par-3 12th. I waited out 3 lightning delays to finish the round during which these pictures were captured, and it was well worth it.

Take a walk with me at dusk in Mullen, Nebraska. Swipe for a spin around one of the most beautiful, inspiring and memorable golf courses ever discovered. Land perfectly suited for golf requires only a light touch, so while Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw visualized over 100 holes in the valley, they settled for 18 of the best. The corridors they laid out across the sand hills changed the course of modern golf, and Sand Hills remains the gold standard (during the golden hour and otherwise).

Longtime followers will note this is the second gallery from a George C. Thomas course on the East Coast. His California designs are better known, but his early work is fascinating. The course at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club west of Philadelphia was likely Thomas’ first foray into course design, where he built a golf course on his family’s farmland. WVCC is one of the oldest courses in Pennsylvania, but remains a great test for modern players thanks to ongoing in-house restoration efforts.

Whitinsville Golf Club may be both the most under-appreciated golf course in Massachusetts and the best 9-hole course in America. Donald Ross’ little gem boasts tricky crowned and mounded greens and significant land movement on a small, wooded property. The approaches at Whitinsville are demanding and two sets of tees make a second loop feel unique. I strongly recommend that visitors do not pass by Whitinsville, and fortunately its members love to show off the place.

Most golfers don’t know that Walter Travis and Charles Alison both have their fingerprints on a public golf course roughly 90 minutes northeast of Montreal. Club de golf de Grand-Mère’s layout traverses dramatic hills and valleys dotted with rugged bunkers en route to diversely contoured greens and surrounds, all for around $50 Canadian. Every golfer deserves opportunities to experience great and historic golf course architecture, period.

Donald Ross’ 36 holes at the sprawling Oak Hill Country Club benchmark a bustling community of Rochester-area members, all of whom are very proud of the venerable East Course. Watching the 2022 PGA, I was skeptical of the playability of the championship-capable layout, but a visit showed that friendlier mowing lines open up many strategic options. Oak Hill challenges 21st century theories regarding presentation of a golden-age golf course in the most enjoyable and penal (well-placed oaks) ways.

Eastward Ho! is back and better than ever. Revitalized bunkers, added distance and strking sand scrapes accompany a still-spectacular piece of land on Cape Cod. Eastward Ho! presents a unique and fun experience with plenty of challenge on one of the few American links. I can’t count many places I’d rather spend a fall afternoon. Is this the most underrated course in the country?
