Aurora - Pemaquid Point Light

Here is another image from last week's show taken during the first big burst of activity around 7:30. I remember looking up at a blank sky before double checking some settings on the camera, and then looking back at the sky to suddenly see these pillars of red light everywhere. I was a bit awestruck at first and didn't really know what to do except just stare. This show produced an incredible array of colors with the aurora captured here coming from a single frame. I hope you enjoy it!

Lights Over Pemaquid

The night sky put on quite a show yesterday! A head on x-class flare and clearing skies meant sky watchers were in for a treat and if Facebook is any indication, lots of people had a chance to see them. Reports indicated that the flare had arrived early in the afternoon, and I knew that I wanted to be at a location right after sunset in case the storm conditions didn't stick around. It was off to a favorite location of mine, Pemaquid Point Light with traffic from the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest being the only thing in my way.

There were plenty of people enjoying the grounds at Pemaquid when I arrived. Clouds were parting and a warm, golden light was bathing the rocks. Perfect conditions for an afternoon at this lighthouse.

I set up down at everyone's favorite puddle with the goal of capturing the lights over the tower and reflected in the water. Much to my surprise the few people that were down on the rocks for sunset left, and I'm pretty sure I was the only one down there for the upcoming light show. I recall taking test exposures, dialing in my comp and just getting things ready so that I wouldn't be fumbling around in the dark. I remember taking a test shot once it got dark, and then looking up to see the most magnificent lights in the sky. There really aren't words to describe the aurora when it's directly overhead. I've photographed the lights before, but never like this. Usually you'd see a white curtain of light but the colors last night were extremely vivid to the naked eye. I made the call to just stick with one image instead of wandering around for different comps. I'll probably share one or two more with purples and reds. It's certainly an experience that sticks with you. I hope you had a chance to see them too!

Aurora - Bug Light

I've been absent from behind the camera for quite some time now as life has been pretty busy! I've managed to make it out here and there, most recently for a showing of the aurora back in May. This particular storm was the most powerful to hit the planet since 1989 and it was something to experience in person. It was amazing to see the lights dance overhead while driving on the highway, and over Portland when I finally pulled into the parking lot at Bug Light. The grounds were full of stargazers and photographers alike, all there to enjoy the show!

I wandered around a bit, and found this comp with some nice highlighted rocks acting as a lead in. I settled in on the rocks, locked everything down, took a test shot and boom - dead battery. I then quickly realized that all of my other batteries were sitting at home next to my charger. Whoops!

All was not lost however, as I ran into a photo friend Cynthia Farr-Weinfeld Photography who saved my butt by lending me a battery! Check out her work if you get a chance. I hope you enjoy the end result. It was definitely one of those nights where I would have been happy to just experience the lights and not take any images. What a show!

Aurora - Chocorua Lake

This is a creative take on the Aurora over Chocorua Lake in Tamworth, NH. The foreground and stars were from a visit a couple weekends ago. The aurora itself from a previous visit in 2014. I went with a composite because honestly I'm not sure if I will return here for the northern lights. More on that below.

Back on the 11th there was a bit of buzz in the community over the aurora making another appearance, similar to the big show a few days earlier. I decided to try my luck somewhere local and Chocorua Lake fit the bill. I hadn't been here for years and was looking forward to a visit. It's an expansive lake at the foot of Mt Chocorua which looks north/north-west and is really dark at night. A great recipe for some night photography!

On arrival I was met with a packed parking lot, cars lined up everywhere and a mass of people on the bridge and shoreline. If you've been here you know that options are kinda far and few between if you want to point north. Crowds are nothing new to landscape photography and everyone should have the same opportunity to experience and photograph these wonderful events. With that being said I hate crowds when I'm out with the camera and the overall experience on this night left a bad taste in my mouth. Instead of a peaceful night under the stars I spent it getting blinded by high beams.

I actually found an empty spot on the shore to the left of the bridge away from the crowd and to my luck there was this big, soggy log in the water which I thought I could use as a foreground element. I had a comp set up and set in for a few hours of waiting for the aurora. Unfortunately this night ended up being a dud which isn't unexpected or anything. I did like the foreground however and wanted to come away from that night with something, so I chose to join it with an exposure from a previous successful trip here. I hope you enjoy it!

Sunrise - Marginal Way

I had the opportunity to meet up with a few photographer friends last week for some banter and exploration of Marginal Way in Ogunquit. We met up early, huddled in the parking lot talking about all sorts of things until the sky started in with a faint glow. At that point we were off, winding in and out up the path and keeping an eye out for possible comps. The sky started to get this real nice glow to it, but off to the side there was this small pocket of light that had a nice shape to it and I wanted to see if I could make an image with it. I climbed down to this small cove that I hadn't photographed before and found some neat lines in the foreground to work with. Shortly after this image was taken the sky took on more of a red color but I liked the deep contrast here and think it plays nicely to the scene. After our meet it was off to Congdon's for donut debrief. Delicious!

Some of the photographers I met up with or ran into on this morning include Benjamin Williamson Photography, Greg Kretschmar Photography, Wanderland Photographic, Harry Lichtman, Jen Lippe Photography and Judy Berk . Give their work a look if you haven't had a chance yet!

Aurora Glow - Pemaquid Point Light

The Northern Lights put on quite a show Sunday! There were even reports of it being visible pretty far south. As usual the storm was raging while it was still light in the states, and our little photo community patiently waited until it got dark to see if we'd have any luck. Seeing the lights can be a gamble. We watch our screens looking at BZ's and KP's etc. but as always mother nature has the final say.

What's interesting about this show was the presence of SAR (Stable Auroral Red) arcs. These SAR arcs form in a different manner than auroras and can take on the same appearance. I honestly don't know if I caught the top of the aurora here or a SAR arc.

I shook off the cobwebs and went to a familiar spot at Pemaquid Point Light. The chatter and excitement from my fellow photographers was the inspiration I needed to get back out under the stars with my camera and I'm very thankful for that. I'm familiar with the grounds here as I frequent this location often, however did not have a reflection image with this particular puddle. As luck would have it, any passing clouds gave way and I was able to capture the red glow of the aurora from down on the rocks. I hope you enjoy it!

Dawn - Portland Head Light

Here is another image from Saturday's sunrise over at Portland Head Light. I made it to the park around 45 minutes before the actual sunrise and at that point the horizon was already filled with these really vibrant colors. I managed to leave my long lens at home which I'm kicking myself over as the light near Ram Island Ledge Light was amazing. Whoops!

Have a great week!

Sunrise - Portland Head Light

I hit the road early Sunday morning with plans for sunrise. It was probably the only chance to get out with the camera for another few days due to all the rain in the forecast. On the drive I could see the horizon already starting to glow at 4:30 and had to switch gears from my original destination to head someplace closer. I chose Portland Head Light as I hadn't been there for a bit for sunrise. We've been there recently to visit mid-day where some of the windows were still boarded up from the storm damage and I had my fingers crossed that everything was fixed up. It looks like they've taken care of the damage, and PHL is back to its old self which is great news.

There was some great pre-dawn color on the horizon, but the clouds blocked the actual sunrise. I'd like to revisit this comp with some direct light for sure. Still, it's always a great time spending the morning at a spot like this. I even ran into Greg Kretschmar Photography doing his thing. Check out his work if you haven't!

Garwin Falls - Spring

While not in Maine, Garwin Falls is definitely one of the best waterfalls that New England has to offer. Unfortunately, access to this waterfall was shut off to the public years back. I guess the area was filling up with trash and there were parking issues. It's important to respect the outdoors and places that you visit. Be considerate of others, pack in pack out, and just have common sense. This image is from a visit back in 2018 that I never processed. On my early morning trips here I was usually alone. It's a fantastic spot filled with moss and greens and I'll definitely miss making images there.

We're starting to green up here in Maine and I'm looking forward to getting those waders on. Have a great weekend!

Sunrise - Bug Light

Here's some of that warm, morning sun to brighten up your day. These clouds and rain will go away eventually... right?

Bug Light is one of our favorite spots to wander around. Benji's a big fan of the walkway up and around the tower, and doing toddler parkour off the picnic tables surrounding the grounds. He's even gracious enough to share this park with everyone else (he owns all the lighthouses in Maine if you didn't know). What a sweet kid!

This image is another unprocessed one from the archives, this time from 2017. Once the sun crests the horizon it casts this warm glow over all the rocks exposed by the outgoing tide. I hope you enjoy it!

Sunfish - Wells Beach

Here's something a little different. I was feeling pretty lousy Saturday night with a cold, but wanted to set the alarm for Sunday's sunrise as the rest of the week was going to be wet and overcast. The tide was out, and when this happens Wells Beach fills up with a variety of rocks and small tidal pools. I was hoping to find a nice arrangement of these rocks for an image.

I made it to the beach about an hour early to wander around. Pulling into the parking lot I could see a nice glow on the horizon which is always a good sign, but it was accompanied by some pretty strong wind. When I stepped on to the beach I could see that this was going to be a problem. All of the tidal pools that I wanted to shoot were filled with foam, there was a constant fine spray coming off the ocean, and it was cold. I was already feeling lousy and these conditions weren't helping. Still, I decided to wander around to see if I could find anything to shoot.

I came across this small arrangement of rocks a few times during the morning. It must have been no wider than 2 feet or so and very unassuming when you stand above it. When you change your perspective though and get really low (I was using a glove as a tripod) the reflection gives it a whole different form. I thought it looked like a fish!

Sunrise - Otter Cliff - Acadia National Park

Boulder beach sits below Otter Cliff in Acadia and is filled with these smooth, bowling ball sized rocks. It's an amazing place to take in the sunrise with the incoming waves smacking rocks together and the sun lighting up the face of Otter Cliff in warm reds. In the warmer months you'll find photographers lined up along the shore, braving twisted ankles in order to grab an image of the sunrise.

We've been pretty busy over here doing the potty training thing, so I haven't been out with the camera this week. This image is another one that was never processed from the archives, way back in 2017. I hope you enjoy it!
