Without regard for his own safety, Moore rushed out of his office and tackled Hawkins onto a bench. The two struggled as Moore worked to restrain him. During the confrontation, Moore was injured in the leg, but he refused to let go. An assistant principal then rushed in and secured the weapon.
Even while injured, Moore continued holding Hawkins down until police arrived. Because of his actions, no students were harmed that day.
Hawkins was arrested and remains in custody on high bail. Principal Moore was taken to the hospital, later released, and is recovering. His bravery helped prevent what could have become a devastating tragedy.
