The Pheasant Cuckoo is one of those birds that feels almost unreal 🌿
Found in dense forests across Central and South America (including Panama), it’s extremely hard to spot. It spends most of its time quietly moving through the understory, more like a secretive ground bird than a typical cuckoo.
What makes it even more fascinating is its behavior: like other cuckoos, it’s a brood parasite it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds and lets them do the parenting.
Its haunting, repetitive call is often heard echoing through the forest long before you ever see it, earning it a reputation as a true “ghost bird.”
“Heard far more often than seen a true ghost of the forest.”
