During the height of the war in Afghanistan, a Belgian Malinois named Layka proved exactly how far a K9 will go to protect their team.
Attached to a U.S. Army Ranger unit, her squad was tasked with clearing a heavily fortified insurgent compound hidden inside a dark cave system.
As the Rangers breached the entrance, intense gunfire erupted from inside, pinning the team down in a tight, exposed bottleneck.
Without hesitation, Laykaโs handler released her into the pitch-black cave to locate and neutralize the shooters hiding in the shadows.
She took four direct rounds from an AK-47, but despite the catastrophic injuries, she refused to back down, subduing the gunman until the Rangers moved in.
Layka survived the grueling seven-hour surgery that followed, losing her leg but saving the lives of every single Ranger on that mission.
