It wasn't until recent years that I began to see the deep value in portraits.

It didn't happen when a stellar image came out of a session that we were proud of on the spot, no.

I didn't happen when I photographed their children back then either, even though it was fun. No not then.

It hit me after doing this for over 8 years while working with the some of the same families year in and out. It hit me when I saw them aging over time through their photos.

It slams me in the feels when I see them going off to college these days...

Now I get it. It makes my heart swell when I see the portraits we've created upon the walls of your homes continuing to give your space a warm and inviting feeling.

This means so much more to me now that I can clearly see the purpose in the long game of photography when it comes to photographing people.

I'm eager to help you freeze frame those chapters of your families' milestones going forward. Even if for the, 'why the heck not' of it, let's create some memories together before they're off on their own and asking me to photograph their engagement sessions.

They grow up quick! This one went off to college this year.

Autumn is upon us, and portrait season is drawing to a close in a handful of weeks! The trees are turning soon so we'll have pretty colors to play with!

In this edition of the Willand Pond Variable Milfoil Removal project. We are going to meet Cynthia Walter, a retired biology professor who has studied bodies of water like this for over 30 years. We will learn about harmful cyanobacteria algae blooms, what causes them, and she's going to connect the dots on how removing the milfoil will have multiple benefits for the health of the pond going forward.

We've all experienced times that have moved us in one way or another. These are the instances that we're fortunate to have a camera by our side. The byproduct of our actions in those split second's are what lives on to remind us of special things. Beautiful things. Anything that catches our attention.

In the moments of creating these images in West Virginia, I was thinking of them. The ladies before us. It was Mother's day. A day that holds a different feeling for all of us.

Some pretty spectacular things aligned that day and everything unseen had unfolded and occurred in order to bring me to that location during the sunset hours. The New River Gorge Bridge Overlook was on my list of places to stop but I never could have predicted the display that nature had in store.

The timing was perfect, though. A passersby on my way towards the steps that lead to this spot said I was late and missed the double rainbow. I replied, "I didn't miss it, I drove all this way to see it, and they'll make another appearance and I'll be there to photograph them when they do."

These were printed as gifts to a new friend that was made on my first trip out to Missouri this year. Her name is Laura. She hooked me up with a large Tupperware container full of homemade chocolate chip cookies for my drive home to New Hampshire.

I love seeing where these little timestamps end up on the walls of other's homes.

Last night was full of good intentions. There was an astronomical combination happening above that I've been waiting weeks for. A new moon, the peak of the meteor shower, and a planetary parade for breakfast at sunrise.

I went out with a bicycle in my car and all the gear needled to develop a time lapse of the milkway rising behind Mt. Washington.

I drove hours away from the house to clear my head of an emotional weekend and get behind the camera alone in the middle of the woods. There were too many tears to count, and then my car's headlights crapped out. I got pulled over for that and harassed because I always smell so good and earthly. Not one photo was created at night. No tickets or arrests were made for smelling so good, either, but my anxiety was through the roof.

That was the point of when I said enough is enough, something is nudging me off of this path tonight. The stars will align next time, and hopefully the things I own can hold themselves together at that time. I drove home and called it a night.

That was just a costly personal therapy drive. I may make another attempt tonight, though. Sometimes we just need to drive...

Today's work is especially heavy to be handling...

I've created many slideshows for other's loved one's end of life ceremonies over the years. They were some of the most rewarding tasks that have come across my desk.

Other people's family photo albums and old digital storage drives of images that haven't been seen in decades, store hidden gems. They show intimate, nostalgic, and interesting perspectives into how other's lived and loved throughout life.

This time I'm pulling apart my old family albums and scanning them in. This time it's me receiving old photos of my mother from close and extended family and her friends.

This time it hurts more than I could've imagined. I had a feeling over the years that this opportunity would eventually be in my hands. But I never expected it to be here this young in life. Even she didn't see it coming this soon either.

But it was her time, and these are the moments that we get to share of what she cherished most. Split second's worth of bliss that were freeze framed throughout her life. Forever imprinted elongated vacation times. Birthdays and holidays shared with others.

I've said this before today, and I will say it a little louder for those in back...

Take more photos of yourself with loved ones. Photograph other people in moments that they'd appreciate. Be sure to capture these precious and priceless times. Because some day a person like me is going to have to file through those old memories in order to create something similar for the same reasons.

My hope for you is that there are too many photos to be seen during the duration of your end of life ceremony. My wish for you and us all is that we're fortunate enough to have many years ahead of us, that are full of moments worth spotlighting.

RIP Mom. You'll surely be missed.

There is an invasive species under Willand Pond in Dover New Hampshire called Variable Milfoil, and we're going to learn about it and how the city is removing it!

Today, we'll meet the dive crew from C&D Underwater Maintenance, who will update us on their progress so far as of being 8 days into the removal process. They'll show us how their DASH (Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting) boat operates, and we'll get to hear about some experiences from their view of above and below the waters of the pond.

Dive in with me as I introduce you to the crew again, and we can find out how things went down at Willand Pond.
