My husband and I came across 2 baby raccoons as we drove around the Carlos Avery Wildlife Refuge, MN. The two were crossing the road and we are certain that Mama was relocating them to a new den. This raccoon is about 5-8 weeks old.

This is a Field Sparrow. These gentle little sparrows are easy to recognize once you know what to look for. They sport a bright pink bill, a crisp white eye-ring, and a beautiful rusty-brown cap that makes them look perpetually alert.True to their name, they skip the deep woods and dense backyards, preferring overgrown pastures, old brushy fields, and roadsides.

They build their tiny cup nests close to the ground early in the spring, but as the summer grass grows taller, they actually build their subsequent nests higher up in the bushes! The best way to find them is by listening. Their gorgeous song sounds like a bouncing ping-pong ball, starting with slow, sweet whistles and accelerating into a rapid, musical trill.

Trumpeter Swans are North America’s largest native waterfowl and a true icon of wetland conservation! With a massive wingspan reaching up to 8 feet, these magnificent, snowy-white birds are impossible to miss. They get their name from their deep, resonant call that sounds just like a French horn echoing across the water.

While they were once pushed to the brink of extinction, intense conservation efforts have helped these beautiful giants make an incredible comeback in marshes and lakes across the continent. They form deeply loyal, lifelong pairs and work together to build huge mound nests out of cattails and sedges, often on top of old beaver or muskrat lodges.

Sedge Wrens are one of the most secretive and nomadic little birds in North America! True to their name, these tiny, streaked wrens love damp sedge meadows, wet prairies, and tall grasslands. Because they are highly sensitive to moisture levels, they are known to abandon a site completely if it dries out, moving on to find the perfect damp habitat.

They are master builders, too! Males will weave multiple "dummy nests" out of live grasses to confuse predators and mark their territory, while the female chooses the best one to line and use for her eggs.Listen for their sharp, chattering "chap-chap-chap-trrrrrr" song echoing from deep within the marsh grass this season.

This is a Veery ,an elusive songbird with one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices in the forest. This small, warm-brown thrush is famous for its ethereal, metallic song that spirals downward, sounding like a delicate musical echo. Veeries love the dense, damp undergrowth of deciduous forests.

They spend most of their time foraging on the forest floor, flipping over dead leaves to find insects and berries.Because they nest right on or near the ground, they rely heavily on healthy, undisturbed forest floors to raise their young.Listen closely for their signature, breezy "veer" call next time you are walking through a shaded woodland.

My husband and I were hiking at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and came across two Coyote Pups emerging from under a boardwalk. We kept an eye out for mama and I took a few pictures. They were so cute and playful!
