I hope y'all have enjoyed a week of the most common nonvenomous snake that I encounter here in southeastern North Carolina, the eastern rat snake. Let me know in the comments if you would like more slithering and scaly encounters next week!

Throwback Thursday to the first of seven eastern rat snakes I found on this same road, within a one mile stretch. I nicknamed the road "Rat Snake Road" that evening. I know, I know...I come up with clever names for things. Taken in southeastern North Carolina.

It's way up close Wednesday again! This eastern rat snake was actively sensing the air with its forked tongue throughout our entire encounter. Taken in southeastern North Carolina.

One characteristic that is common in almost all eastern rat snakes is the dark stripes that run the length of its body. Some are very vivid with a lot of contrast, while others are more subdued and blend in with the rest of the snake. Regardless, almost every last one has that feature.
