The second way that copperhead venom has potential in cancer treatment is called anti-angiogenesis. What this means in layman's terms is that the protein found in the venom starves the tumors food. The cancer tumors cannot grow beyond microscopic size without developing their own network of blood vessels to supply nutrients. The protein stops this formation of new cells, effectively cutting off the tumors food supply. Taken in southeastern North Carolina.

The venom of a copperhead contains a protein called Contortrostatin. This protein works through three different steps. One of these is that it binds to integrins, which the cancer cells use to interact with, and anchor onto, healthy surrounding tissue. This prevents the cancer from adhering to and invading healthy surrounding tissues. Taken in southeastern North Carolina.

Welcome back y'all! I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend. October is breast cancer awareness month, and last year I posted copperheads in tribute since their venom is being studied as a possible treatment. I will be doing that again this week, along with some information on how humans are attempting to utilize this amazing snake and its venom as a way to help rid the world of the horrible disease. What are you looking at? The American barn owl is a medium sized bird of prey that ranges throughout both North, and South, America. They prefer the open plains where they watch for their favorite prey which primarily consists of small rodents such as field mice and voles. This is a tawny eagle. It is from a subfamily of eagles known as "booted eagles" for their heavily feathered legs. It has a range across most of sub Saharan Africa, parts of northern Africa, and parts of the Indian subcontinent. It prefers grasslands and arid areas such as deserts. Do I have any owl lovers here? How can you not be when you see this face?! This is a tawny owl. They are a strictly nocturnal bird of prey found throughout most of Europe and parts of western Siberia, and has seven recognized subspecies. They have amazing night vision and pretty much completely soundless flight, making them a very formidable predator. Taken at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri.
