This park is part of a wetland restoration project. In 1995, the arboretum bought 30 acres of land that used to be a tiled cornfield to turn into a meadow. This makes Spring Peeper Meadow the country's first restoration from a tiled field to a meadow.

The land was first used as a farm in the late 1800s. It was tiled in 1927 to improve the quality of the crops, and it was retiled in 1957 when the old tile became clogged.
The farm was fruitful, cultivating corn, soybeans, and eventually hay until the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum bought the 30 acres of land in 1995. By buying this land, it was also saved from being developed into commercial land.

Crosby Farm Regional Park is a key part of a network of parks that help preserve the biodiversity of the Mississippi River through the Twin Cities. The park mainly consists of floodplain forests, steep wooded slopes predominantly covered in oak trees, scattered wetlands, small lakes (Crosby Lake and Upper Lake), and the Mississippi River shoreline. During floods, the Mississippi River allows fish and other aquatic species to enter these small lakes, where they serve as nurseries for their young.

Hidden Falls Regional Park dates back to the late 1880s when nationally known landscape architect and park planner Horace Cleveland picked this location as one of four park projects in Saint Paul. The park was not touched until the late 1930s, which improved its features. It was last touched in the 1960s, which gave it the look that we see today.

Before the Europeans settled in Minnesota in the 1840s, the Big Woods Forest covered most of the Southeastern portion of Minnesota. Most of the forest has been cut down, and only bits of this forest remain today.
This forest once covered 5,000 square miles. 100 miles long and 40 miles wide. But today, there’s only 460 acres left of the big woods. 100 acres to Big Woods State Park and 360 acres to the University Forestry School.

The waterfall is spring-fed. It’s dry during the dryer months and is roaring during the rainy months or after snow melt. The water comes from stormwater drains. The water was untreated and unwatched. A Ford factory was located above the falls but it closed in 2011 and a plan was set in place to add a water treatment to clean the water that will be fed to Hidden Falls and making its way to the Mississippi River. This plan will also add a constant flow at Hidden Falls so no more dry periods.
