I know the mimosa tree is an highly invasive species, but it sure does have some beautiful blooms! I can see why it was desired as an ornamental plant. We saw many of them growing along the road side in Black Water River State Forest.

So I spent a few days camping in the Black Water Forest last week looking for Pitch Plants to photograph and document. While searching the forest I was wondering where gnomes come from - you see, Angelique loves gnomes! Well guess what I stumbled into in the middle of the forest? Yup, a village full of gnomes - and they were so happy and friendly! I always had a suspicion I would find them there! 😂

Obviously, I’ve been having some fun with AI. I would never try to pass an AI generated (or altered) photo as real. I’ve always thought of the pitcher plant bogs as a whimsical place, and what’s more whimsical than gnomes. Since Angelique loves gnomes (and mushrooms), I generated this image to give her for our 36th anniversary… she absolutely loved it! 😍 I hope you do too!

I wanted to share an eye-level perspective of one of the pitcher plant bogs I’ve been photographing this spring. It’s a 16 shot (8 across, 2 down) panorama - so it’s really wide! This bog is more than twice the size than what you see in the photo as there’s much more outside the frame. The bog is probably ~30 acres in total- so its is a good size bog. But I know of others that are much larger than this one.

Please respect my decision not to share locations of these bogs; most of them are deep in the forest and there are no trails to lead you to them. They are a delicate (and protected) ecosystems that is sensitive to foot traffic and poaching - my goal is to keep them protected and pristine.

In this photo you see five Sarracenia x moorei at the bottom of the photo (two that are deep purple, three with a white on top and red veins) - they illustrate just how extreme their colors can vary. They are hybrids as a result of natural cross pollination which can result in some bizarre color variations like these.

If any of you Sarracenia experts out there would like to comment to educate us or add context, please do! We welcome your insights into these bizarre and interesting plants.

Angelique and I went for a walk along the beach yesterday. The water was pure perfection! We live in paradise!

My two prior posts of the pitcher plants we taken on the out fringe of the bog where it’s easier to find compositions; this one was taken right from the center looking out. There’s so many variants and hybrids in this bog, creating an explosion of color… it’s hard to believe they’re real!

I don’t think there’s a more whimsical place in nature than a bog full of Sarracenia pitcher plants.

My first pitcher plant photo from this spring, highlighting Sarracenia flava with a few leucophylla scattered in the background. My favorite bog has really came to life with thick and beautiful growth this year. I prefer to photograph them under foggy conditions which gives them a ethereal, almost whimsical aura, but I also love taking photos of them backlit by the light of the rising sun peaking through the trees - really makes those pitchers pop!
