I’m sorry for being relatively AWOL lately. I’m still active, still shooting, and definitely not sitting around with my camera collecting dust.

Lately, I made an important decision that had been weighing on me for quite a while: I’m retiring from wedding photography.

It’s truly been an honor to be the storyteller for the many couples who have trusted me with their wedding days over the past 19 years. Some have become friends or even family to me, and I’ve always been grateful for that. I never complained about the workload or the stress that came with the job.

Ultimately, it came down to something I could no longer ignore: the entitlement and interference from some family members and wedding parties, and the resulting friction in the creative process. Life is too short, and after 19 years, I’ve decided I no longer want to put myself in situations where my work or approach isn’t respected.

But I’m not retiring from photography.

I’m still offering proposal and lifestyle photography, along with professional headshots. And beyond that, I’ve gone exploring.

The party is still going.

This was a rather eventful proposal this past weekend! She slipped off the curb and twisted her ankle, and I went and got EMTs to assist her. But the magic was still captured and the couple made it home safely

I'm fairly sure I lost an office headshot gig to AI / virtual headshots. Most people know this option does not take the place of creative talent, but it reveals a different customer than what I am looking for. I don't want to be the old guy saying "get off my lawn" as AI could be a useful ally in society. Though, I do not think it is a suitable replacement for human creativity.

I am thankful to have reached the point in my career where I love working with my clients, but not every booking is needed if it doesn't fit. If an AI headshot is all someone's career is worth, so be it. I must believe my clients are still out there. Oh yeah! I am booking headshot sessions—hit me up, don't be shy. :D

Been a good week for inquiries for proposals and wedding. I am also working on building a photography mentoring program for both intentional photography, and building an emerging photography business. I'm not one of those "earn six figures" or "hype coach" snake oil salespeople. Just a working photographer ready to work with others. Does this sound like a cool idea?
