you are sitting at an open window
a storm is quickly approaching
you can feel it coming
rain hits the courtyard below
somewhere a girl is practicing her singing
a spray paint can is rattling in the next room
rain is dripping from the rooftops
walking through an cobblestone road
you hear a chorus from far away
they shake a hat filled with change
a street musician with jet white hair stares at you
you search for a coin in your bag
you never break eye contact
you nodded to each other
an unspoken respect was shown
you are the only person listening to him play
people walked past
they never heard him
the music is interrupted by a loudspeakers
a woman’s voice speaks in Czech
she repeats the same sentence twice
there is something beautiful
in how strange this moment is
the recording cuts
there is a pause
the beauty fades
an alarm starts to sound
quiet at first
growing louder
increasingly
dissonant
the air is thick
with tension
the sound cuts
three tones
repetition
three tones
silence
a reminder of war
the air raid alarm
a time never forgotten
you sit in silence
take a bite of cereal
where is all of this headed
what does it mean
another bite of cereal
does it matter
that i record these things
will you ever feel

The Jack Pine forest in northern Nova Scotia. This specific area is unique because it was used as a controlled burn zone to study the fire adaptation of the Jack Pine tree. The cones of this tree only open when their temperature has reach over 122'F. The forest floor is covered in cones that can wait up to 40 years to reseed the forest and spark new life in the wake of a fire.

The intensity of this moment feels like it's screaming. Like it wants me to hear it truly. To feel the weight of her bags as she walks, the tired still lingering in her eyes, the pain of walking in worn down soles, & the heat of an overcoat on a summer afternoon. To me, I think she's saying something. Something I should hear. Something I should feel. Especially in a country where nothing seems as if it's ever really changing.

My father holding Andy's flag as he was buried in the Montreat veteran cemetery. In this moment I decided to double expose the two pictures. Seeing it now all I can think about it is how connected everything is. My father to his father, my eyes to my camera, the mountains to the cemetery & our bodies to the dirt.
