I contemplated not posting, because this account has been silent and neglected for many months now. I’ve shared on my personal account so isn’t that enough? Um…..not even. It’s past time for us to stand up for what matters.

I’ll also admit that when I first heard of this Black Out movement, I thought “oh great, an excuse for everyone to take the day off” because guys, it’s exhausting. It’s so tiring to be brought face to face with these facts that you’ve been overlooking for your whole life. I feel such empathy overload. But can that even compare to the silence our brothers and sisters have felt their whole lives, being born into a system that was never built to support them or to make them thrive.

I’m here, I’m listening, I’m learning, I’m not silent about this any longer. Black lives matter.

Today I’m making the trek back to Virginia for one of my most anticipated trips this year! I’ve been learning from the great this year on the building blocks of my business and digging in to find out more about why I do this and how I want to do it differently. It’s been a hard year and I haven’t put into the training what I’ve wanted to, so you could technically call it a fail. We’re so afraid to call failure what it is, aren’t we? Around my office they sometimes compare it to a dial. “Well we didn’t get there completely but we got further than last year!” I’m learning to call it what it is and also give myself the grace to do better—because I know I will. ⠀

One big takeaway that’s fresh from KJ’s teaching though is that you have to make growing a priority by planning maintaining tasks and planning growing tasks. ⠀

Wowza, did you have to go back and re-read that? I paused, scratched it down on a post-it, and that post-it has lived on my laptop ever sense. ⠀
⠀
You’re the only person who’s ever going to look out for you. You’re the only person who can meet your goals or get you somewhere new by this time next year. And it won’t happen overnight so stop waiting for the new year to plan it out. Start now with little steps and when those little steps get easier then take two at a time. ⠀

Here’s some perspective: Abigail and Austin’s session wasn’t even a month ago, and the day we took their photos the temperature was 70 degrees. A few days ago I scraped snow off my car. 😳 Thanks Nashville for finally cooling down, but I think you’ve over corrected.

I’ve been shooting more family and maternity photos than ever and I’m not complaining one bit. It kind of makes me feel like a family historian and that’s a way cooler title than “photographer” so I’ll take it!

Veterans Day has always been a favorite of mine. Honestly it started back when I was a band-kid in high school. The Veterans Day assembly was the highlight of the semester because we would honor a handful of veterans from our community by performing each song from the armed forces of our nation. It was a powerful moment when the trumpet would play taps for those who gave their all for the country.

I don’t have much to give to our veterans, but I’m grateful that today we can stand and give our appreciation for their service.
