Whether traditional, modern, or rustic - when nature plays a role in the architecture… that is what I gravitate towards. I spent 2 full days shooting this location in Highlands, NC LAST March. 4 structures on the property captured as well as the land. This will be featured in Semi Silent 5 which should (hopefully) be done in a few weeks!

One of the first shoots I did after I put up my “architectural photographer” flag 🏴 back in 2018. Prior to this i was shooting almost exclusively real estate since 2011 (with the exception of a handful of custom homebuilder and commercial shoots), and weddings/portraits from 2006-2011.

I share all of this because I know there are some photographers reading this wanting to transition to shooting architecture. I say the same thing every time, it starts with a decision and then it just takes time. It took about 3 years and a couple of moves across the country to start shooting exclusively architecture and it wasn’t until I stopped shooting real estate that I truly understood the difference.

All this to say, it doesnt come over night. There is no fast-track. 7 years after making the decision and I’m still figuring it out and I assume that I will be for the rest of my career.

I don’t really follow a formula for my shoots. My preference is to simply respond to what is happening in the room. However, there are times when it is REALLY nice to know how to use tools properly and with intention. One way or another, light was created that didn’t exist in each of these photos. The last photo was not strobed, but was shot handheld on a gloomy overcast day.
