I realize it looks like I caught a photo of Iron Man flying over Louisville. However, this is really a long exposure photo of legendary Matt Younkin flying his aerobatic 1943 Beechcraft C-18S, aka “Magic by Moonlight,” over the Louisville skyline for the Thunder Over Louisville Air Show, on the evening of April 18, 2026. As if performing death defying spins, loops, and hairpin turns aren’t enough, Matt flies his difficult and harrowing aerobatics at night. And from what I read, he has no help from night vision goggles or advanced aeronautic controls in his stock C-18S. The lights equipped on his aircraft make the white exhaust smoke glow in the night sky, which just adds to the visual appeal. (I lightened up the photo just a bit to bring out the atmospheric detail.)

This tall and noble Oak watches over the forest floor like an all knowing eye in the sky. It was the turquoise sky and lime green leaf buds that drew in my lens. I love how this one turned out.

Vulture Moonlit Vigil. A wake of Turkey Vultures gathers in a tree watching me under the cloud veiled moon. This is photo art (composite work using my own photography).

The longer I stayed there, the more vultures flew in for the occasion. I shot many versions of this scene to produce this moon composite. But I knew when I shot this one, it would be my favorite because of the bird I caught in flight. I almost like the original single exposure (3rd slide) better than the photoart version. Why are your thoughts?

I happened upon this tree along a trail and instantly became mesmerized by its unique framework of limbs reaching towards the blue sky. So I used gradient framing as the central theme for this one.

Ghostly water falling from darkness and flowing back into darkness.

This is my first post of 2026. I needed a little break from IG. Thanks everyone for staying with me during my breather. 🙏

A Super Cold Moon on an icy cold night. We were all clouded out here in Louisville, for the Super Cold Full Moon event yesterday evening. So in anticipation of that, I started working on this composite idea earlier in the week, using this tree (in the foreground) as inspiration. I had already planned on shooting this tree for the real event anyway. Fortunately we’ve had some snow and ice this week to add to the ambiance. I hope you like the end result as much as I do.

You may remember a vertically oriented photo I posted recently of the Beaver Moon, with a scene similar to this one. Several of you responded favorably to that photo. So here is a horizontally oriented photo taken just a minute or two after shooting the first one. When I compare the two, I can clearly see how the lighting changed (over the time that passed between the shots), while I waited for the moon to come back out from the clouds. My settings had to change as well. I’m not sure if one is better than the other. I’ll let you be the judge.

As I sat on the lake bank watching those impossible colors dance across the sky, I kept thinking about how tiny we really are in a universe this vast. We rush and spend so much energy stressing to control things that barely register on the cosmic scale. So it’s almost comforting, in a way, when all we can do is sit in silence and watch the celestial magnificence unfurl above us.

And yes, that is in fact a meteor ☄️ that I accidentally captured in this shot. I had no idea it was there. I didn’t see it on the night of the shot. In fact, initially, I didn’t even pay attention to this shot on my data card because the photo started out so dark. I thought it was just a “throw away” shot, considering I had so many properly exposed shots to work with. It was by accident that I even opened it up to view it. So after working on the lighting in post production, this is what I came up with. I’m still humbled and astonished. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Excited to present to you a new listing on my Etsy Account. This beautiful, vertically oriented moonscape is printed on a shimmery metallic pearl paper and comes in your choice of a 2:3 or a 3:4 aspect ratio. I also have a NEW (you haven't seen it yet) horizontally oriented version of this scene coming soon--it's slightly different with a wider angle view of the colorful autumn trees. Stay tuned!

Was I dreaming last night? Did I really capture frame after frame of incredible light from the aurora over Louisville? Never thought this would be possible in Kentucky. But these are wild times.
