This one is for the Milky Way lovers out there.

I shot this overhead view of the Milky Way band from the Red River Gorge in Kentucky late last year. There may be hundreds of millions of stars in this shot. Hydrogen gas glows pink. Sulfur gas looks warm orange. And dust (yes, star dust) blocks the light and looks dark brown or black.

This is a stack of 15, 20 sec. exposure images, f1.4, ISO 1600, 24mm. The tree top view foreground is a composited layer.

Milkyway over Cumberland Falls, Kentucky. This is a new (from scratch) edit of a series of photos I shot here last year. The Milkyway background layer is a stack of 18 images, combined to reduce noise. The foreground layer, which includes the waterfall and boulders at the bottom of the frame is a single exposure captured during the blue hour just shortly before nightfall begun. The camera never moved from the tripod. And I was a little concerned about the copperheads lurking under those rocks, especially considering how dark it was. Incidentally, in reality, it’s extremely dark when the Milkyway shooting begins. The photo is a re-creation of the night, but brightened up quite a bit for viewing enjoyment. I could show a dark black frame, because that’s actually what it really looks like in real life. But what would be the fun in that? LOL

Anyway, no copperheads were there…probably because it was too dark to see them. But that’s the story I’m telling myself. No copperheads were there. All was well. And the night was incredible!

This is a single shot of last night’s buck moon, which is much too cropped and noisy, but that’s not the point. I have also stacked a couple masked images of a mysterious UFO that intercepted the moon’s path during some random shots I had fired in rapid succession. I only wish I had started shooting sooner. The bird is flying right to left. Can you imagine what a great photo this would be if I had possibly caught the bird when it first started intercepting the moon from the right side? Yep, kicking myself. Oh, and before you ask, no, I had no idea this was happening live. I only discovered it from my computer screen after the fact. It was much too small to see live from the camera’s LCD screen, much less in real life. I’ve included an iPhone shot from behind the camera for perspective.

Photographing the moon is like “opening a box of chocolates,” as Forrest said.

Thought I’d share a new version of one of my older photographs. Back when I first saw this scene from my camera over four years ago, I knew it was special. I panned my camera to the right for some special quote or phrase to be included later in editing. But it wasn’t until just recently that I thought of something special enough to include. To my parents, may they rest in peace.

Every now and then, I like to rummage through old photograph files to look for good shots I may have previously overlooked or forgotten about. Yesterday, I came across this one. It was a much darker exposure originally in RAW format. That may explain why I didn’t notice it before. This is the sunset view from Arch Lake at Pickett State Park in TN, taken in the Fall of 2022. Never processed or posted before.

I realize it looks like I caught a photo of Iron Man flying over Louisville. However, this is really a long exposure photo of legendary Matt Younkin flying his aerobatic 1943 Beechcraft C-18S, aka “Magic by Moonlight,” over the Louisville skyline for the Thunder Over Louisville Air Show, on the evening of April 18, 2026. As if performing death defying spins, loops, and hairpin turns aren’t enough, Matt flies his difficult and harrowing aerobatics at night. And from what I read, he has no help from night vision goggles or advanced aeronautic controls in his stock C-18S. The lights equipped on his aircraft make the white exhaust smoke glow in the night sky, which just adds to the visual appeal. (I lightened up the photo just a bit to bring out the atmospheric detail.)
