A tornado was confirmed in Northern Alabama from Monday afternoon.
Watched radar on this storm and knew something was definitely on the ground.

[5:30PM] Our survey team found EF-1 and EF-0 tornado damage in the New Market area today (near Wi******er Road) from the storms on 6/22. Additional surveys will be needed over the next several days- we will provide updates as we have them.

🌪ANATOMY OF A TORNADO🌪

So I've seen a few comments on my post the other day about the Blue Mound/Macon, , and how "it's not a tornado" because there's "nothing touching the ground".

Firstly, let's go over what a torando is, by definition:

"Tornado - A violently rotating column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm." - weather.gov NOAA Glossary

By definition a tornado is "a violently column of air". So let's take a step back and look at what the main component of a tornado is: Air. Air is not visible unless there is something mixed in with it like debris, dust, or water.
When we typically think of a tornado, most people think of some tall cone or rope funnel extending all the way from the clouds to the ground. But in reality, a lot of tornadoes don't look like this. Many times you will have a funnel at the cloud base, then a circulation on the ground under it. This IS a tornado! Just because you don't see the funnel go all the way down, doesn't mean a tornado isn't on the ground! The tornado is made up of air, and you don't always get that condensation funnel all the way down due to things like moisture, the pressure of the vortex, or even just how organized the tornado itself is.

So yes, those photos are of a tornado. A pretty large one at that! You just don't have that "classic" funnel all the way to the ground! 🌪
