The North Atlantic puffin has to be one of the most endearing birds—full of personality, and on this occasion, a perfect subject nestled among the coastal flowers of Wales.

The Gherkin has been a standout feature of London’s skyline for years now. When I worked in the building opposite, I remember watching the final panes of glass being installed in August 2003 — definitely not a job for the faint‑hearted.

We all picture that first moment of gazing at Mount Everest, but the real experience surprised me. When I trekked to Everest Base Camp, I discovered that Everest hides behind a fortress of other mountains. It made perfect sense then why simply getting to its base is demanding, let alone attempting the ascent.

As the sun dipped behind Skokholm Island off SW Wales, a resident puffin settled in next to me—an unexpected companion for a perfect sunset.

A sprawling raft of more than a hundred male sea otters gathered just off the coast of Tofino on Vancouver Island. These “bachelor rafts” are more than a quirky sight — they play a vital role in strengthening social bonds and keeping the group tightly knit as the otters rest, groom, and drift together on the Pacific swells.

One of my favourite black bear encounters was with this young male fishing for salmon near Campbell River. The Quinsam River Hatchery trail is a fantastic spot to watch bears at work — no organised tour required, no fees, just you, the river, and the thrill of seeing these animals in their element.

A sweeping view from Sherbrook River Beach, tucked along the wild coast of New South Wales near the Twelve Apostles. Most visitors stick to the famous lookouts at the Apostles and the Razorback, leaving the longer trails almost empty — which turned out to be a gift. I ended up watching a spectacular sunset in breathtaking surroundings with no one else in sight, just the roar of the ocean and the colours unfolding across the sky.

The imposing medieval gates of Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight stand as a striking reminder of its most famous chapter: serving as the prison of Charles I for around fourteen months before he was taken to London for his trial and eventual ex*****on.

Catching the gaze of a female mountain gorilla on the volcanic slopes of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, I can’t help wondering what thoughts move behind those deep, steady eyes. This particular family has grown accustomed to humans through years of careful habituation, and even so, we’re allowed only a single hour each day in their presence. It’s just enough time to feel the weight of their intelligence—and to realise how much of their inner world remains a mystery.
