Not just pictures - a time capsule.

Families who work with me aren’t looking for “a few nice photos.” They want the story - a tangible, hold-in-your-hands time capsule of what life feels like right now.

Each book becomes a chapter in their family history. And when we work together year after year we build an entire library of childhood and parenthood memories - the laughter, the chaos, the routines, the tiny details that will matter more with every passing year. 🥰

When I’m old and look back on my life’s work, this is what will make me proud: knowing there are shelves in homes filled with these books, preserving love in its most pure everyday form.

It’s not a small thing.

Would documentary approach work for a session with older kids?

Absolutely - and here’s how we’ll make it happen:

1️⃣ More time, more natural flow.
A longer session allows everyone to relax and truly be themselves. Older kids often need a little extra time to warm up and move past the “what does the photographer want me to do?” stage.

2️⃣ Building trust through connection.
I engage in real conversations - I’m genuinely curious about you and your kids. Older kids have unique perspectives, interests, and stories to share, and that’s exactly what makes these sessions so meaningful.

3️⃣ Collaborating on ideas.
Before the session, please brainstorm a few activities your family loves doing together. When kids get to contribute their ideas, they feel more excited and involved - and it always leads to authentic, memorable moments.

You know what’s super common? Families often book annual sessions when their kids are little - and then stop once they hit the teen years. Why? Because traditional posed sessions are cringe according to teens (and honestly, they’re not wrong!).

That’s where the documentary approach shines. It’s relaxed, real, and focuses on connection over posing.

I’d be honored to help you capture this special season with your older kids. ❤️

Q: Why is it important to include our home in the photos?

A: Your home is more than just a backdrop - it’s a character in your family’s story. It’s where first steps are taken, where bedtime routines unfold, and where countless memories are made. Years from now, when your kids are grown, they’ll love looking back and seeing the space that held so much love, laughter, and life.

For a 2-hour Family Storytelling session, I usually suggest a mix of indoors and outdoors. We’ll start at home with whatever your kids are into right now - building with blocks, drawing, dressing up, baking - whatever feels true to your family. I’ll follow their lead!

Then we’ll head outside to play in the backyard or visit a favorite nearby spot. This way, your gallery reflects a variety of moments - a little window into what life feels like for your family right now.

And yes, while storytelling is the heart of these sessions, we also set aside 10-15 minutes for some relaxed portraits. The best of both worlds.

For so many families, fall is the perfect time for a session. With a traditional shoot, the focus is usually on the portraits with a beautiful backdrop - the trees showing off their colors. But with my documentary approach, it’s all about your family’s favorite fall traditions - and there’s never a shortage of those!

What does your crew love most? Jumping into leaf piles? Pumpkin picking (and carving!)? Getting creative with Halloween decorations and costumes?

These are the kinds of memories you and your kids will want to look back on years from now. And don’t worry - we’ll sneak in a few posed portraits too. 😉

As I get ready to reconnect with returning families and welcome new ones during the busy fall season, I thought it would be the perfect time to revisit these 5 tips for a 2-hour Family Storytelling session.

These sessions are all about capturing your family’s real life - the everyday moments, quirks, and connections that make your story unique. Instead of stiff poses or perfectly coordinated outfits, the focus is on play, laughter, quiet in-between moments, and the little routines you’ll want to remember years from now.

A book full of your family’s story - not just faces, but feeling.

There’s something powerful about holding your memories in your hands. A photo book isn’t just a collection of images - it’s a tangible story of your family’s life, told through real, everyday moments. The joy, the chaos, the quiet cuddles, the in-between glances - it’s all there.

Printed albums allow your children to revisit their own story again and again, flipping through pages that show them just how loved they are.

They spark conversations, unlock memories, and become a treasured heirloom - something you’ll reach for on slow afternoons or pass down to future generations.

Digital files are fleeting. A book is forever. ❤️

A morning in the park. 20 slides, 20 pages from the book layout.

Yesterday, as I finalized Rachel’s book and sent it off to print, I found myself wishing I could share moments on IG in a way that feels like flipping through a book - appreciating the sequence and flow.

This post is just a snippet from our 2-hour Family Storytelling session: moments in the park.

Families who return year after year - like Rachel’s (this was our 8th session together!) - come for the book. For the story. Not just for individual images.

What do you think - does this feel like a story unfolding as you flip through? 🙂

Q: What if we don’t do anything “special” during the session?

A: That’s the point! Documentary sessions aren’t about special occasions; they’re about ordinary days that are extraordinary in their own way. Pancake breakfasts, couch cuddles, backyard adventures - these are the moments that tell the story of your family’s life. The beauty is already there; I just help you see it. ❤️

From disaster to bloom: my gardening journey. ☺️

Last April - just a month before our wedding - disaster struck. The roots of a tree in our front yard had eaten through the sewage pipes, causing basement flooding. When the pipes were replaced, the entire front yard was torn out.

When we moved into this house, the front yard had already been alive - full of native plants and flowers that attracted pollinators. We focused on vegetable beds in the backyard and did very little out front. But after last year’s chaos, the space was left empty… just an ugly patch slowly filling with weeds. We were overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start.

Then came my dear friend Haley - a passionate gardener who lives right around the corner - to the rescue. She guided me first in the fall, and then into this spring. One step at a time, one day after another, I started showing up for the garden. With Daniel’s help on the bigger projects, the space began to change.

Somehow, I’ve become that person: stepping outside every morning after coffee to see what’s blooming, to pull a few weeds, to deadhead flowers. Feeling joy, pride, and a deep connection to this space we’ve rebuilt.

Now, instead of a yard of weeds, we have marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, cleome, and so much more. This summer, the garden has been my creative project, my meditation, and my joy. My heart is full. ♥️

Earlier this year, Polina Bulman Photography was honored with the Best Documentary Family Photographer LOVE Award by !

Daniel and I were planning to attend the celebratory event, but something came up and we had to cancel at the last minute. I tried to convince myself it wasn’t a big deal - there are other networking events on my calendar that I’ll be attending soon. But the more I thought about it, the more FOMO I felt.

The thing is, events are not like any other. The community that has built over the years is absolutely incredible. I’ve met so many small business owners serving the Main Line and Greater Philadelphia through these gatherings. The most important part is that we share the same values and have a similar outlook on how we want to serve our clients - and for that, I am extremely grateful!

Yesterday, Sarah and I finally got together after weeks of trying to coordinate our busy schedules. Sarah made me feel so loved and celebrated, and the FOMO completely disappeared.

So this year, as I add a third LOVE award to my shelf with deep appreciation and gratitude for my clients, I’m also celebrating the beautiful friendship Sarah and I have built over the years - and all the other wonderful connections I’ve made thanks to .
