This image.

I’ve held onto it for a long time.

It’s not some grand vista. No towering mountains. No dramatic wildlife encounter. No once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Just a sunrise. A few pelicans. A bridge connecting Iowa and Illinois.

My grandpa helped build that bridge.

This spot, along with the old mill in town, is where my photography journey really began. Long before I knew what I was doing, long before photography became part of who I am.

I made this image in May of 2023.

I had driven home to surprise my mom for Mother’s Day. For whatever reason, I felt pulled to make that trip. She was completely surprised when I showed up.

That morning, I was out before sunrise with my camera. I wandered around town making photographs, and this ended up being the last frame I took before packing up and heading to my parents’ house to say goodbye and hit the road.

I hugged my mom.

Told her I loved her.

Less than a month later, she was gone.

This photograph became something I never expected it to be.

It’s the last image I ever made while my family was still whole.

The last image before everything changed.

Before grief rewired the way I see the world.

Before it changed how I look at light, landscapes, wildlife, and photographs.

Before it changed my outlook, my priorities, and pieces of who I am.

My life can be divided into two chapters now: before this image, and after it.

That’s why I’ve held onto it all this time.

Because it’s more than a sunrise, some pelicans, and a bridge.

It’s the final photograph from a life I can never go back to.

The funny thing about photography is people see the photos.

What they don’t see is what happens to me while I’m making them.

Once I get rolling with a camera in my hands, I kind of disappear into my own world. The noise of everyday life gets turned down to a whisper. My attention shifts to light, weather, movement, and whatever is happening right in front of me.

I’m still listening, of course.

Bears don’t care if you’re having a peaceful moment.

Neither do moose.

But everything else? The stress, the worries, the endless noise that follows us around?

Gone.

For a little while, it’s just me and the outdoors.

No expectations.

No pressure.

Just the next frame.

I’ve found a lot of beautiful places over the years, but the real gift has always been the peace I find standing behind the camera.

The world spends a lot of time chasing bright lights.

I’ve always been more interested in the ones that quietly keep shining.

Standing alone on the edge of a vast lake, weathering storms, darkness, wind, and time… this old lighthouse doesn’t ask for attention. It just does its job.

Maybe that’s why I like places like this.

The older I get, the more I find myself drawn to things that are steady instead of flashy. Things that last instead of things that impress.

The last light of day.
The calm water.
A beacon in the distance.

Some things don’t need to be loud to matter.

One of my favorite things about photography has nothing to do with the camera.

It’s finding the roads I’ve never been down.

Old roads. First roads. Gravel roads. Two-track trails disappearing into the mountains. The kind of places where you have no idea what’s around the next bend, what’s waiting over the next ridge, or where the road even ends.

That’s one of the reasons I rarely fly anywhere. The photographs that mean the most to me usually aren’t found at famous overlooks or marked destinations. They’re found somewhere in between—down an unknown road that caught my eye and made me wonder what was out there.

On this Wyoming morning, a faint two-track disappeared into the fog, vanishing into a landscape I couldn’t see. The mountains were hidden. The morning light was dramatic and shifting. Everything beyond that bend was a mystery.

That’s exactly where I feel at home.

Some people see fog and uncertainty and turn around.

I see an invitation to explore.
