~Joffre Lakes Provincial Park~ British Columbia
While staying in Pemberton, BC, we got to experience one of the most incredible hikes in the area — Joffre Lakes.
For the Lil’wat Nation and N’Quatqua First Nation, Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, known as Pipi7íyek, is not simply a scenic destination but really a place with deep cultural and spiritual significance. Visiting this area made me reflect on the broader conversations happening across many wild places about who has historically cared for and belonged to this land, who has access to it today, and how recreation and conservation can exist alongside respect for Indigenous cultures.
We set out before sunrise to beat the crowds and experience the quiet of this beautiful spot. The hike begins at Lower Lake and climbs through stunning views up to Middle Lake. Once the sun reaches the water, it turns the most incredible shade of green. From there, the trail continues up to Upper Lake with views of Matier Glacier. Even in May, the trail was still quite icy near the top, so we were glad we packed our micro spikes. Starting early meant we didn’t see another person until our hike back down, which made the experience feel especially peaceful. During the summer months securing a pass can be difficult, part of the ongoing balance between protecting a place that draws so many people while preserving what makes it special. This was one of those places that leaves you in awe not just because of its beauty, but because of the reminder that landscapes can be both places to visit and places that carry history, meaning, and belonging.
