There weren’t enough daylight hours today. But scouting by moonlight ain’t bad. The beach is so magnificent at night. And my favorite one seems to be open, post Ian. Or at least not barricaded. Wish me luck for a sunrise shoot tomorrow. I have the most unruly subjects. Surely the will be groggy. None of them take direction and one year they all mooned me. But I gave birth to them so 🤷‍♀️Lol. After rescheduling 4 times we are crossing our fingers for no hurricanes, Covid, car accidents or even stubbed toes. With any luck I might get a family photo and our holiday card sent out by Valentine’s Day 😉

“Mom, everything has been so crazy and so divided for so long. Seeing everyone come together this week really restores my faith in humanity.” - Logan

YOU have all sparked hope in the hearts of my children and so many others.

This week we have counted our blessings as we shuffled through parking lots full of dead fish, picked photo albums out of trees, saw mobile homes floating in the bay and many many friends and neighbors lives reduces to a pile of debris on front lawns. In the midst of all the heartbreak, I have shared Logan’s sentiment; hope. I can’t thank you enough for your many acts of kindness that have allowed us to reach out to those most vulnerable in Marco Island, Estey Ave, Harmony Shores ( including a chunk of the 200 mattresses they needed ), Palm Lake, Bayshore Land Yacht Harbor, Fort Myers Beach, Pine Island.

You have chopped, shopped, cooked, networked, cleaned, delivered, donated, lifted, hauled and supported this community in immeasurable ways.

THANK YOU!

After the craziness of holiday shooting, I normally take January to work on a few personal projects. This January I’ve been helping out with and not finding much photography time. I was super excited to sneak this project in though. I taught the third graders at a little bit about photography and guided them through a portrait project, where they photographed their classmates. Such sweet and smart kids. We are so grateful for our time at Seacrest. The images will be compiled into book form, for this year‘s gala. Hope to see a few of you there.

Love this. Totally reflects how I feel this time of year. Trying do do all the things. Have all the fun. Do all the work. Dropping stuff left and right, but still having fun ( mostly ). This might be my first and last post for a bit. I’ve got a bunch of lemons that I’m concocting something delicious with. Perhaps with a splash of vodka. And cheers to this sweet family that let me chase their kids around with a scruffy stuffed dog while snapping photos, one night last week. Sweet and beautiful children.

Photographing your own children is hard. Tears of frustration flow with regularity. One year a friend and talented photographer was photographing us when the most horrible thing came out of Sawyer’s sweet little 4 year old mouth. I was appalled. Horrified. Then for no conscious reason, horror shifted to laughter that erupted throughout the whole family. Tears of laughter rolled down my cheeks. Ever since then we have made a terrible little tradition in our house. For our Christmas photoshoot, the kids are allowed to break our very strict bad language rule. I know. I know. Not winning any parenting awards. The best/worst part about it is that when I look back through the Christmas cards and the sweet photos, all I can think about is the kids eyebrows raised and wondering “Is mom really going to let me get away with this?”. So with holiday photography season upon us, don’t stress about perfection. Because behind the scenes, we are all a mess sometimes. And even if everything falls apart, we might just get a funny photograph out of it. Swipe to see an outtake from what I shot of the boys this year. And no, I won’t tell you what he said right before this shot.

A few more from my new favorite location. Love this place, this light and this sweet family.

Feeling small today. In all the wrong ways. It made me think of being in the redwoods this summer. It felt good to be small there. I just unpacked my last bag a few days ago. That seemed more like an act of denial than procrastination. A few artifacts of summer here and there allowed me linger in the simplicity of being away. Physically and mentally. I love being on the road. There is less everything. Less drama, less stuff, less mess, less distraction.

When I was younger, a youth pastor told me that a good christian radiates energy that makes others want what they have in their heart. It was not bad advice on the surface. But I was 15 and did not want what this guy had in his heart ( it was not joy ). So I rolled my eyes and kept passing notes. 25 Years later, through a random series of circumstances, my children ended up at a Jewish preschool. The energy and life that Rabbi and his family bring to the community are a breath of fresh air. I could not help but think of the pastors words. The joy that this family radiates was something I wanted for myself. The good that they do was something in which I wanted to partake. They have been strong role models not just for me, but especially for my children. Thanks to them, my children learned the value of a mitzvah by the time they were 3. It has been a privilege to be able to photograph their family and watch the children blossom into their own unique beacons of light.
