“How do flowers get their scent? How does a butterfly know to go taste a flower?” -My 11 year old today as he was smelling a bouquet of flowers he picked out for me.
Turns out, flowers get those amazing smells from tiny, floating chemicals called volatile organic compounds. Different compounds create different profiles:
terpenes give us those classic sweet floral scents like roses, benzenoids add a rich, fruity or sweet spice, and fatty acid bits create that crisp, fresh-cut green smell.
As for the butterflies? They're basically flying GPS systems. They use their antennae to sniff out those chemicals from way far away, and they even have taste receptors on their feet—so the second they land, they instantly know if there's actual nectar waiting for them!!
