Compression & Character
It’s not just a zoom; it’s a perspective shift.
Choosing between a 35mm and a 135mm isn't about how much "room" you have in the composition. It’s about how much you want the background to participate in the portrait.
35mm (The Storyteller): Keeps the viewer in the room. Use this when the location tells part of the subject's story.
85mm (The Standard): The classic "Beauty Lens" that balances subject pop with a natural feel.
105mm / 135mm (The Specialist): These lenses compress the world. They pull the distant background forward and melt it away, creating a level of isolation that wide lenses can't touch.
The Pro-Secret: As your focal length gets longer, your "depth of field" appears shallower, even at the same aperture.
