The Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC. I really loved the beautiful architecture of this old historic museum building. The shapes, colors and textures really stood out along The Mall. The sign over the front door read National Museum 1879.

A daily dose of Gemma. "Dad, it is just way too hot to go outside today. I'm just going to lie here and keep an eye out on what is happening in here!" Even Gemma thought it was too hot to be outside yesterday with the heat index topping 104 degrees. She looks worried I'm going to make her get up and go outside as she relaxes against the wall! I think Gemma looks nice and comfortable so we can wait awhile before heading out for some exercise!

June 13, 2026. Along Crow Rock Road. As you get to the bottom of Crow Rock Road and are approaching the village of Ellerton, you get this amazing panoramic view of the landscape to the west. With storm clouds moving in over Church Hill the sky made for a dramatic vista. The greens of early summer still stand out nicely as Crow Rock Road leads us into the beautiful scenery. There are several beautiful farms with bank barns that sit along this stretch of the road although you can only see one farm with the bank barn sitting at the edge of the road and the farm house off to the right. The slopes of Church Hill rise in the background with fields and farms dotting the land. The back roads of our area always provide peaceful and amazing views.

The base of High Falls in Dupont State Park. I was mesmerized by the water flowing over the rocks at the base of High Falls. Shooting at a slow shutter speed you can see the veil of water dropping into teh pool at the base from above and then you can see the water rushing over the rocks as it races down stream to the next falls.

A view of the United States Capitol from the Washington Monument. I framed the distant Capitol with two fluttering flags surrounding the Washington Monument. The slight breeze on a hot summer evening blew the flags so they almost assumed the very same position! The Capitol Rotunda shines brightly in the distance at the end of The Mall. The usual view of the Capitol was blocked by construction equipment and materials being used to prepare for the Great American State Fair.

A daily dose of Gemma. Hot days mean pool time! Gemma doesn't get into our pool but she does enjoy playing with her ball by dropping it into the pool and waiting for us to retrieve it and throw it to her to chase. So here is Gemma sitting poolside and staring at her ball that is floating in the water and looking very hot! Eventually she will go and lie in the garage or under the umbrella and get a drink but she seems to love being out in the sun. Okay Gemma I will throw the ball one more time and then you need to take a break!

June 12, 2026. Sumantown Road Bridge. This historic bridge over Catoctin Creek sits in a beautiful location to the south of Middletown. The bridge sits along Sumantown Road at the bottom of a steep hill through the trees from its intersection with Paul Rudy Road. The 101 foot span of the truss bridge bridge was built in 1910 and rehabilitated in 1999. I debated posting this in color versus black and white since it s spring time image of the bridge and decided on the black and white version because I thought it went well with the metal bridge and wooden decking, but also because I liked how the vibrant green leaves on the surrounding trees had a glow to them.

High Falls, Dupont State Park near Brevard North Carolina. In the guidebook I used to find great waterfall hikes in North Carolina, this waterfall on the Little River was accurately described as "massive and majestic". High Falls consists of a series of short falls and cascades that split into several flows of water at the very top and the water flows over a huge exposed rock face and the water drops over 100 feet into a pool at the bottom. A bit of trivia: High Falls was one of several falls along the Little River that were used as shooting locations in the Hollywood movie "The Last of the Mohicans". If you look off to the right side of teh waterfall you can see the mist that was thrown up into the air by teh falling water crashing into the rocky pool at the base.

If you stop along the walkway that goes around the Washington Monument and lie on your back in the cool grass with your feet pointed away from the Monument, and then try to capture an image of the Monument with your camera, this is what you would see! It took a bit of upside down gymnastics to shoot the entire Washington Monument illuminated at night and also try and get all of the 50 flags that encircle the base of the Monument into the image! There were interesting clouds passing in the sky above the Monument and the lights illuminated them too which made for a nice backdrop. It was exciting to visit Washington DC and see all of the amazing monuments and federal buildings surrounding The Mall on the 250th anniversary of the founding of our Nation.
