Three Pittsburgh family photo looks I love-and why they photograph so beautifully.

Here’s one of my biggest styling tips after years of photographing families

Don’t match. Coordinate.

The best family wardrobes have texture, layers, solids, and a little pattern to give the photograph depth without making them feel busy.

Earthy
Cream, camel, chocolate, olive and worn neutrals. Mix a solid dress with a subtle pattern skirt, then add texture through knit, linen, suede or denim. This is gorgeous for Pittsburgh’s natural, organic locations.

Editorial
Think, black, cream, denim, gray, and richer, neutral tones. Mixed clean solids with one subtle pattern, structured jackets, interesting fabrics, or layered pieces. This works beautifully against Pittsburgh’s architecture, brick, concrete and city textures.

Timeless
Cream, taupe, soft, gray, muted blue, and other quiet neutrals. Add visual interest through texture, a chunky knit, flowing dress, linen shirt, or subtle pattern piece. This look is beautiful in my clean, neutral studio.

My role of thumb: if one person is wearing a pattern, pool colors from that pattern for every one else and mix in solids and texture.

You want everything to feel like it belongs together without looking like you tried to make everyone match.

And Pittsburgh moms if figuring out what five different people should wear already has you stressed…

The number one mistake, Pittsburgh families make when choosing a location for family photos…

Picking a location simply because “it’s pretty.”

When I choose a location, I’m thinking about so much more:

Does it fit your family’s personality?
How old are your kids?
Will they have room to move and explore?
Does the location work with your wardrobe?
What will the light look like at the time of your session?
And most importantly – does it fit the feeling we want your photos to have?

A family with three energetic little kids may need a completely different location than a family with teenagers.

And if you want elevated, editorial portraits? I’m probably not taking you to the same place. I choose for a family, wanting soft, organic and playful.

The location should support the photograph. It shouldn’tbe the photograph.

After 14 years plus, I don’t choose locations because they’re popular on Instagram.

I choose them because I already know how your family, your wardrobe, the light in my camera are going to work there.

That’s the difference between finding a pretty spot and actually planning a portrait.

There’s one thing about planning, family photos in Pittsburgh that changes everything…

Our weather has absolutely zero respect for your family photo plans.😂

One minute it’s sunny. The next it’s cloudy. Then your weather app says rain. Then it doesn’t rain. And don’t even get me started on trying to time fall color.

But after 14+ years of photographing Pittsburgh families, I’ve learned something:

Magazine worthy family photos aren’t about getting lucky. They’re about having a photographer who knows how to plan for Pittsburgh.

The right location for the look you want.
The right time for beautiful light.
The right wardrobe for the location.
A back up plan when Pittsburgh weather does it thing.
And most importantly… Realistic expectations for your kids.

Because you’re three year old does not care that you spent weeks coordinating everyone’s outfits.

And they shouldn’t have to. And neither should you.

My background in psychology, years teaching little ones, and 14+ years photographing families has taught me how to work with kids instead of forcing them into perfect poses.

So Mom, you don’t have to spend the entire session saying:

“ look at the camera.”
“ smile.”
“ please stand still.”
“ just one nice picture!”

that’s my job. You just get to be Mom.

Over the next 30 days, I’m basically handing Pittsburgh Mom’s my photographer brain.

I’ll be sharing my favorite Pittsburgh area locations, what actually photographs well, wardrobe tips, the best time for sessions, how I plan around our unpredictable weather, how to prepare little kids, and the little tricks I’ve learned after more than a decade behind the camera.

Beautiful light isn’t an accident. It’s a skill.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when investing in professional portraits is choosing a photographer based on a pretty location or a handful of images—without looking at whether they truly understand light.

Because lighting doesn’t just make a portrait look good.

Lighting creates emotion.

It can make an athlete look powerful.
A senior look confident.
A mother look soft and connected.
A portrait feel dramatic, timeless, joyful, or editorial.

After 14+ years behind the camera, I don’t just look for good light. I know how to create it, shape it, control it, and use it intentionally to tell the story I want that portrait to tell.

And that matters when you’re investing your money in professional photography.

You shouldn’t walk away thinking, They’re nice photos…but they don’t feel special.

You’re not just paying someone to own an expensive camera and press the shutter. You’re investing in their knowledge of lighting, posing, composition, location, and the ability to bring all of those pieces together.

Before you spend money on portraits, ask yourself:

Does this photographer consistently create the kind of images I would actually want hanging on my walls?

Because the right photographer doesn’t just document what you look like.

They know how to make you feel something when you look at the photograph.

That’s the difference between taking a picture and creating a portrait.
