Hidden in the rolling hills just outside Wauconda sits the mysterious Pflug Mansion, one of northeastern Washington’s most fascinating forgotten landmarks. Built by German immigrant John Pflug beginning in 1908, the home was meant to be a grand family estate. John hauled every load of lumber himself by horse and wagon from a sawmill nearly 10 miles away and completed much of the work with his own hands. Sadly, the house was never fully finished, and after the family left in 1921, it was abandoned. Today, the weathered mansion stands as a haunting reminder of the dreams, determination, and hardships faced by Washington’s early homesteaders. It remains on private property and can only be viewed respectfully from the roadside. 
That mansion has a haunting beauty and is one of my favorite hidden historic spots in northeastern Washington. It makes for an incredible stop if you’re exploring the old mining country around Wauconda.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is California’s largest state park, covering more than 600,000 acres of breathtaking desert landscapes. While it may appear dry and lifeless most of the year, the desert holds a remarkable secret.
When the region receives just the right amount of winter rainfall, millions of dormant wildflower seeds awaken, creating the rare phenomenon known as a super bloom. For a few short weeks, the desert transforms into a vibrant carpet of desert lilies, sand verbena, desert sunflowers, poppies, and countless other native wildflowers.
Super blooms don’t happen every year—they require the perfect combination of rainfall, temperature, and timing, making each one a truly special event. It’s one of nature’s most incredible reminders that even the harshest landscapes can burst into extraordinary life.
