When in Springfield, IL it's worth the time to visit the Lincoln Home Site. President Lincoln and his family lived in this home for 17 years prior to his presidency.

The Car Museum in Pontiac, IL on Route 66 was a fun stop. You gotta love those old hood ornaments!

Continuing our drive from Joliet to Springfield, IL. We visited Sprague's Super Service Station and Carls's Ice Cream in Normal, IL. We had lunch at Dixie Truckers in McLean, IL. And, we saw several sites in Lincoln, IL, the town that President Lincoln christened with watermelon juice (they couldn't find any ch*****ne). There we saw the Old Mill (now a museum), the world's largest covered wagon, and a watermelon statue.

Day 3 of our Route 66 road trip - We drove from Joliet to Springfield, IL. We saw giants, gas stations, train depots and old granaries.

While on our Route 66 adventure we visited the Old Joliet Prison. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi filmed part of "Blues Brothers" inside this prison. To me it was a brutally sad reminder of how penal institutions operated in this country's past.

Day 3 - Chicago to Joliet, IL. We saw our first giant on the roof of Ci**rs & Stripes, Dell Rheas Chicken, Rich & Creamy (Joliet), Union Station (Joliet), the first Dairy Queen (Joliet), and the Rialto Square Theater (Joliet). Had a fabulous lunch at Juliet Tavern in downtown Joliet. If you're ever there, I highly recommend the Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap!

We ended day one of our Route 66 road trip with dinner at Berghoff's. Day two started with a walk to breakfast at Lou Mitchell's. The early morning walk was brisk but we saw some beautiful architecture along the way.

And so it begins. Happy to be taking a road trip with my son. We are traveling the Illinois portion of Route 66 as it celebrates 100 years! These images are at, or near, the beginning of the Mother Road.
