Fun Fact: MiniDV tapes were once considered one of the best consumer video formats available.

From family vacations and birthday parties to school performances and sporting events, MiniDV was the format of choice for many camcorders throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Because MiniDV stored video digitally, it often produced sharper images than older analog formats like VHS-C and Video8. Many families still have boxes of MiniDV tapes tucked away containing memories they haven’t watched in years.

Fun Fact: Magnetic videotape can actually stick together as it ages if stored in poor conditions.

Heat, humidity, and moisture can all affect videotapes over time, which is why proper storage matters. Garages, attics, and damp basements are some of the worst places for old media.

The photo below shows an actual videotape with visible mold growth inside the cassette. In some cases, mold and deterioration can damage tapes to the point where footage becomes difficult — or impossible — to recover.

Many tapes may look fine on the outside while slowly deteriorating inside the cassette.

Recently, TREK Video Services worked with a client whose tapes had developed mold over the years. Before any transfer can begin, tapes like these must go through a careful cleaning process to help protect the footage and the playback equipment.
