The image shows Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Omaha Beach was one of the five landing sectors for the Allied invasion of German-occupied Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Floating pontoons and steel roadways, meant to connect ships to shore, were torn apart. You can see one of these floating docks that washed ashore.
It was the site of the fiercest fighting on D-Day, with American troops encountering strong resistance from German defenses. The 5-mile-long beach now serves as a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died there. Today, the beach is a historic site featuring memorials and cemeteries honoring those soldiers.
