It had been cloudy all day, and hopes for viewing a winter sunset were diminishing. But at around 5pm, as I was getting comfortable in my warm hotel room, sunlight appeared at the window. A quick check on a weather app indicated sunset would be around 6:30pm. It also showed quickly dropping temperatures and gusty winds approaching, which somewhat explained the clearing sky.
My best bet for an open view would be west of town (Mackinaw City), somewhere on the Lake Michigan shoreline. I grabbed my pack, got in the truck, and headed towards Wilderness State Park. After driving around for an hour, I was becoming dismayed at not finding an ideal location. There wasn't much time left, and I circled back, deciding to go to the Headlands International Dark Sky Park.
Upon arriving, I was the only vehicle in the lot. As I opened the door, I was greeted with a gust of wind that encouraged me to bundle up around my neck and head. My fingertips were already numbing. Heading down the trail to the beach, I could see that I had made it in time, but would I be able to withstand the wind gusts? The golden hour had started, and it would be just moments before the sun fell below the horizon. I checked my camera settings, waited, and then popped off a dozen shots. Just like that, it was over, and I headed back to that warm hotel room!
