I know sessions with little ones can feel stressful, and adding a newborn in the mix can make it seem even more daunting. But it doesn’t need to keep you from documenting this season together.

The magic happens when families show up ready to play and let their kids be themselves. Little ones will wander, cry, and laugh, and giving them the space to do so is where the most meaningful images come from. This session was just that, and we walked away with the sweetest sibling portraits that will be treasured for years.

Family sessions can feel overwhelming. Between outfit planning and keeping little ones happy, documenting your family might fall to the bottom of the list.

While that's understandable your Whidbey Island Washington family session doesn't have to be daunting. Here are a few simple tips to help things go more smoothly:

1. Keep everyone rested and fed
Aim for a solid nap and a good meal before your session. A full belly and good rest make a world of difference.

2. Set expectations in a positive way
Talk to your children ahead of time about the session. Framing it as something fun helps build excitement and sets the tone.

3. Let them be themselves
Some of the most beautiful, meaningful images come from genuine interactions. Trust that I will guide gently and create space for their personalities to shine.

If you’re in the Whidbey Island area, you know how beautiful our rocky beaches can be. When the weather cooperates, they make a stunning backdrop for a maternity session. We were lucky to have a calm, sunny morning for this one, and it made the entire experience feel peaceful and timeless.

Beach sessions do require a little flexibility when it comes to scheduling, but when it all comes together, the results are worth it.

I recommend reaching out to schedule your maternity session early in the second trimester. This allows enough time to plan around weather, wardrobe, and timing that feels good for your body.

Many parents worry their newborn won’t sleep during the session. The truth is, there’s no need to. As an Anacortes Washington newborn photographer, I take a gentle, baby-led approach that allows us to document your little one exactly as they are.

It feels like you blink and they’re one.
These moments slip by faster than we expect!

I had the joy of photographing this sweet girl’s first year session at Meerkerk Gardens on Whidbey Island, and it reminded me why I started offering my Early Days Collective. It is a way to document your family’s story from maternity to that big first birthday.
