This is what I’m thinking about when I paint a backdrop: how those subtle shifts in tone will look behind a person, through the camera, under the light.

A backdrop doesn’t have to be busy to have dimension.

Some of my favorite surfaces look almost simple from across the room. Up close, there are small shifts in tone, texture and undertone that interact with the light.

That’s what I’m thinking about while I paint each Reed & Canvas backdrop: not just What color is this? but What is this going to do once someone puts a subject in front of it and lights it?

Next I’m testing one of the easiest ways to accidentally make a beautiful backdrop photograph flat.
