Today I looked across the field and saw, looking back at me, the unmistakable long black necks and white chins of a group of Canada geese.

I shivered inadvertently, like the brisk air of fall was upon me even though it wasn't.

But nature doesn't often make mistakes and even though the Snowberry Clearwing Moth is busy in my garden foraging nectar from summer blooms, the geese are already looking ahead.

Sometimes in my life and in job, I am reminded that we are here and then we are gone.

Nothing is promised in these lives of ours.

While I know it's not healthy to live in fear of what is out of our control, it's also probably not healthy to live without acknowledging the limitations of this world.

In the history of this world, our presence here is a blip, a nanosecond a fleeting moment in time.

We should spend more time chasing joy and worrying less.

Photos can commemorate milestones and birthdays. They can be an annual tradition or an updated Christmas card. We can send them to family near and far or share them online.

A lot of photographers will tell you that photos are for the future you to remember the now with.

For me though photos are for right now. I don't really spend a lot of time thinking about the past, maybe I will someday? I'm too excited about right now and what's coming next.

Photos can be whatever you want or need them to be, but for me they are a reminder of what is unfolding right in front of me every day. A way to ground me right here and show me what I have so that it doesn't get lost in the noise and monotony of day to day life.

What's a photo to you?

A list of things I'm inexplicably delighted by in no particular order...

The song sparrow endlessly trilling on my back fence/arbor/tree branch like every few moments there's something very important the world must hear.

The haze of the sunlight filtering through the foliage as the daylight draws to a close.

Following a hummingbird while she darts from bloom to bloom and nectars in my garden.

The way my dogs trounce all over with the same excitement every time I walk in the door.

The sound of the waves lapping at a shoreline, rhythmically and repetitively.

Welcoming the change of seasons, especially the arrival of spring and the transition to fall.

Anything that happens cyclically or seasonally. I love how it's predictably the same and but simultaneously new.

Like the photos in the first half vs the second half of these images. Taken slightly more than a year apart, the first as a family of three and the last as a family of two.

A short time later, breakfast in the same cafe. Everything and yet nothing stays the same.

By the end of the month the flower farms in our area will be bursting with color. This senior session at Oakbrook West Farms is one of my favorites with the river, fields of blooms and glowing skies.

I've got a few spaces on my schedule left if you want to make one yours.

May I never forget how to see joy in the ordinary, that in hindsight is so exquisitely unordinary.
