“Hello, is it me you're looking for?” 🎣

Great blue herons are year-round residents along the Moss Beach shoreline. Standing over four feet tall, they hunt the tidepools and kelp beds with remarkable patience — until a loud call like this breaks the silence.

California quail, the state bird since 1931, are a common sight in Moss Beach backyards. They travel in family groups called coveys and use their distinctive “Chi-ca-go” call to stay in touch. Their forward-curving topknot makes them easy to spot in the coastal scrub. The male often get on the top of our fence to watch over his chicks down below.

The Monterey cypress grove above Fitzgerald Marine Reserve was planted more than a century ago and has become one of Moss Beach’s signature landscapes. Walking here in the morning fog feels like stepping into another world — and it’s just a few minutes from Highway 1.

🐐🌾 The goats grazing hillsides were deployed by Star Creek Land Stewards in collaboration with Coastside Land Trust and the City of Half Moon Bay, as part of a planned grazing project. Their mission: reduce wildfire fuel by munching dry brush, aerate and fertilize the soil, and promote native plant growth—completely chemical-free and low on fossil fuel.

This isn’t a one-off gig. The City and Mid-Coastside Sewer Authority have been contracting with Star Creek Land Stewards for at least a few years to graze both east and west of Highway 1 near Old Bev Cunha Road. It’s a tested strategy for keeping fire risk low on sensitive land.

🖼️ And if you love the Coastside as much as we do, check out our local photography prints and Moss Beach & Beyond photo book—your walls will thank you.

🐚 Barnacles and the Quiet Art of Staying Put
Some lives are made of movement. Others, of stillness.

Here on the Moss Beach coast, a mussel opens slightly to the tide, and barnacles cling like stubborn ideas — fixed, patient, determined to endure.

Barnacles don’t just attach themselves to things; they glue themselves for life, using a natural adhesive stronger than almost any human invention. Scientists still study it. Poets still miss the point.

It’s not the force of their grip that fascinates me. It’s the choice to settle, to make a home on a shell that's already shifting in the surf — to trust the ocean not to forget them.

📸 Captured on a quiet walk, where the details are small but the stories are deep.

We share more of these slow, coastal stories — in texture, color, and tide — at mossbeachlife.com.

🌊💙 Sailors of the Sea: Washed Ashore
They arrive like a dream — tiny, translucent sails glinting in the sun, scattered like spilled sapphires across the sand.

Meet the Velella velella, or “by-the-wind sailors,” delicate drifters of the open ocean, guided by wind and tide. These stunning blue sea creatures aren’t true jellyfish, but close relatives, floating the surface of the Pacific with their tiny sails upright — until the wind blows them ashore.

Want to take a piece of the Pacific home?
Explore more coastal wonders like this in our photo books and limited-edition prints at mossbeachlife.com — inspired by the same beaches where these sailors land.

Because every tide tells a story — and we’re here to help you hold onto it.
